The Mocker

(2-minute read)

In a gripping series of events, the drama unfolds as Abraham, at the height of his joy, is faced with a dark turn when Ishmael, his son by Hagar, harbors a deadly intent against his half-brother Isaac. Sarah’s fierce protectiveness over Isaac ignites a rift, compelling Abraham to make a heart-wrenching decision to cast out Hagar and Ishmael. The weight of this decision devastates Abraham, torn between loyalty to his firstborn and his new heir, but divine intervention reassures him, promising a great future for both sons.

The harsh reality sets in as Abraham’s decision drives Hagar and Ishmael into the unforgiving wilderness of Beersheba and Paran, their only provisions running dangerously low. In a desperate and heart-wrenching scene, Hagar, unable to bear the thought of her son’s suffering, sits far away, consumed by despair. Yet, as hope seems lost, a divine voice reaches out to them, guiding Hagar to a hidden well of water and ensuring the survival of her son. The series climaxes with a renewed sense of hope as Hagar and Ishmael, now revitalized, continue their arduous journey through the wilderness, their futures uncertain but marked by divine promise.

Ishmael attempts to kill Isaac
Jasher 21:13-14
When Isaac was 5 years old, he was sitting with Ishmael at the entrance of the tent. Ishmael came and sat across from him, took a bow, strung it, placed an arrow in it, and aimed to kill Isaac.

Climax

Sarah sees what Ishmael is doing and demands that Hagar and Ishmael be cast out
Genesis 21:9-11, Jasher 21:15, Jubilees 17:4-5
Sarah saw Ishmael, the son of Hagar the Egyptian—whom she had borne to Abraham—mocking, playing, and dancing. She was deeply troubled because of her son. So she said to Abraham, “Cast out this bondwoman and her son, for the son of this bondwoman will not be heir with my son, Isaac.”

This request was very upsetting to Abraham because of his maidservant and his son, and the thought of sending them away grieved him.

YHWH agrees with Sarah
Genesis 21:12-13, Jubilees 17:6-7
God said to Abraham, “Don’t be troubled about the boy or your bondwoman. Listen to everything Sarah says, because it is through Isaac that your offspring will be named. But I will also make a nation from the son of the bondwoman, because he is your child too.”

Falling Action

Abraham sends out Hagar with provisions
Genesis 21:14-15, Jasher 21:16, Jubilees 17:8-9
Early the next morning, Abraham got up and took 12 loaves of bread and a bottle of water. He gave them to Hagar, placed them on her shoulder along with the child, and sent her away. She left and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba, in Paran, and Ishmael became an archer. When the water in the bottle ran out, the boy grew thirsty, and she laid him under one of the shrubs.

Resolution

The angel of YHWH aids Hagar
Genesis 21:16-19, Jubilees 17:10-12
She went a short distance away and sat down across from him, under an olive tree, about a bow shot away. She said, “Let me not watch the death of the child.”

She sat down across from him, lifted her voice, and wept. God heard the boy’s cries, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said, “What’s troubling you, Hagar? Why are you weeping? Don’t be afraid, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. Get up, lift the boy, and hold him in your hand, for I will make him a great nation.”

Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. She went, filled the bottle with water, and gave the boy a drink. Then she got up and made her way toward the wilderness of Paran.
