4 And Zepho enticed Angeas king of Africa to collect all his army to go and fight with the Egyptians, and with the sons of Jacob, and to avenge of them the cause of his brethren.

6 And Zepho was in those days very great in the sight of Angeas and in the sight of all his people, and he continually enticed them to make war against Egypt, but they would not.

Angeas requests that Jania become his wife

Jasher 60:7-9

7 And it came to pass in those days there was in the land of Chittim a man in the city of Puzimna, whose name was Uzu, and he became degenerately deified by the children of Chittim, and the man died and had no son, only one daughter whose name was Jania.
8 And the damsel was exceedingly beautiful, comely and intelligent, there was none seen like unto her for beauty and wisdom throughout the land.

11 And the servants of Turnus came to Chittim, and they asked for Jania, to be taken unto Turnus their king for a wife.

The people of Chittim reject the request from Turnus

Jasher 60:12-14

12 And the people of Chittim said unto them, We cannot give her, because Angeas king of Africa desired her to take her unto him for a wife before you came, and that we should give her unto him, and now therefore we cannot do this thing to deprive Angeas of the damsel in order to give her unto Turnus.
13 For we are greatly afraid of Angeas lest he come in battle against us and destroy us, and Turnus your master will not be able to deliver us from his hand.
14 And when the messengers of Turnus heard all the words of the children of Chittim, they turned back to their master and told him all the words of the children of Chittim.

17 And Niblos, the son of Lucus, heard that his uncle Angeas was coming, and he went out to meet him with a heavy army, and he kissed him and embraced him, and Niblos said unto Angeas, When thou askest my father after his welfare, when I shall go with thee to fight with Turnus, ask of him to make me captain of his host, and Angeas did so, and he came unto his brother and his brother came to meet him, and he asked him after his welfare.
18 And Angeas asked his brother Lucus after his welfare, and to make his son Niblos captain of his host, and Lucus did so, and Angeas and his brother Lucus rose up and they went toward Turnus to battle, and there was with them a great army and a heavy people.

26 And they built upon it a high tower there upon the highroad, and they called its name after the name of Niblos unto this day, and they also buried Turnus king of Bibentu there in that place with Niblos.

Exposition

J: 48 | Y: 2314 | Zepho and his men escaped from Egypt
Jasher 60:1
When the year came around—72 years after the Israelites went down to Egypt, following Joseph’s death—Zepho, the son of Eliphaz and grandson of Esau, fled from Egypt with his men, and they all left the land.

Zepho becomes captain of the African army
Jasher 60:2-3
Zepho arrived in Africa, which is Dinhabah, and went to Angeas, king of Africa. Angeas welcomed them with great honor and made Zepho captain of his army. Zepho earned the favor of both Angeas and his people, and he served as the captain of Angeas’ army for many days.

Rising Action

Zepho attempts to convince Angeas to battle the Egyptians but fails
Jasher 60:4-6
Zepho tried to persuade King Angeas of Africa to gather all his troops and go to war against the Egyptians and the sons of Jacob, to avenge the wrong done to his brothers. But Angeas refused to listen, knowing the strength of the sons of Jacob and remembering what they had done to his army during the battle with the children of Esau. Even though Zepho had become highly respected by Angeas and all his people, and kept urging them to go to war with Egypt, they would not agree.

Angeas requests that Jania become his wife
Jasher 60:7-9
At that time in the land of Chittim, in the city of Puzimna, there was a man named Uzu. The children of Chittim had come to regard him as something of a god, but the man died without a son. He had only one daughter named Jania, who was extremely beautiful, graceful, and intelligent—no one in the entire land matched her in beauty and wisdom.

The people of Angeas, king of Africa, saw her and praised her to him. Angeas sent a request to the children of Chittim, asking to take Jania as his wife, and the people of Chittim agreed to give her to him.

Turnus requests that Jania become his wife
Jasher 60:10-11
As Angeas’ messengers were leaving Chittim on their journey, messengers from Turnus, king of Bibentu, also arrived in Chittim. Turnus had sent them to request Jania for himself as a wife, since his men had also praised her to him. So he sent all his servants to her. The servants of Turnus came to Chittim and asked for Jania to be given to Turnus as a wife.

Climax

The people of Chittim reject the request from Turnus
Jasher 60:12-14
But the people of Chittim said to them, “We cannot give her, because Angeas, king of Africa, had already requested her for a wife before you came, and we agreed to give her to him. So we can’t do this and take the girl away from Angeas to give her to Turnus. We’re very afraid that Angeas might come against us in battle and destroy us, and Turnus, your master, would not be able to save us from his hand.”

When the messengers of Turnus heard everything the people of Chittim said, they returned to their master and reported it all to him.

The children of Chittim informs Angeas on what Turnus has done
Jasher 60:15
Then the children of Chittim sent a message to Angeas: “Look, Turnus has also sent for Jania, trying to take her for a wife, and this is how we answered him. But we heard that he’s now gathered his entire army and is planning to attack you. He intends to come through the road of Sardunia to fight your brother Lucus, and then he plans to come fight you.”

Angeas responds with the force of his army
Jasher 60:16-18
When Angeas read the message from the people of Chittim, he became very angry. He rose up, assembled his entire army, and marched through the islands of the sea by the road to Sardunia to his brother, Lucus, king of Sardunia.

Lucus’ son, Niblos, heard that his uncle Angeas was coming, so he went out to meet him with a large army. Niblos embraced him and said, “When you ask my father how he’s doing and go with him to fight Turnus, ask him to make me captain of his army.”

Angeas did as Niblos asked. When he arrived, Lucus came to meet him. Angeas greeted his brother and asked about his well-being, then asked him to appoint Niblos as captain of his army, and Lucus agreed.

Then Angeas and Lucus set out together to fight Turnus, leading a great and powerful army.

They battle in the valley of Canopia and Niblos died
Jasher 60:19-21
They traveled by ship and entered the province of Ashtorash. Turnus came out to meet them—he had set out for Sardunia, intending to destroy it and then move on to fight Angeas.

Angeas and Lucus met Turnus in the valley of Canopia, and a fierce and intense battle broke out between them there. The battle was especially hard on Lucus, king of Sardunia—his entire army was defeated, and his son Niblos also died in the fighting.

Turnus died
Jasher 60:22
Angeas then ordered his servants to make a golden coffin for Niblos and placed his body inside. Angeas returned to the battlefield and fought again against Turnus. This time, Angeas was stronger and killed Turnus, slaughtering all his people with the sword. In doing so, Angeas avenged Niblos and the fallen army of his brother Lucus.

Falling Action

The people of Turnus retreated and were defeated
Jasher 60:23-24
When Turnus died, the morale of his surviving troops collapsed. They fled from Angeas and Lucus. Angeas and Lucus chased them down the highroad between Alphanu and Romah, and they killed Turnus’ entire army with the sword.

Nibolos and Turnus are buried opposite each other
Jasher 60:25-27
Lucus, king of Sardunia, ordered his servants to make a brass coffin for his son Niblos and bury him right there. They built a tall tower on that spot along the highroad and named it after Niblos—a name it still bears to this day. They also buried Turnus, king of Bibentu, there in the same place with Niblos. Now, along the highroad between Alphanu and Romah, Niblos’ grave is on one side, Turnus’ is on the other, with a paved road between them that remains to this day.

Lucas returns to Sardunia and Angeas visits Bibentu
Jasher 60:28
After Niblos was buried, his father Lucus returned with his army to Sardunia. Angeas, king of Africa, traveled with his people to the city of Bibentu, the city that had belonged to Turnus.

Resolution

Angeas spares Bibentu and allows Zepho to spoil and plunder it from time to time
Jasher 60:29-30
When the people of Bibentu heard about Angeas and his reputation, they were terrified. They came out to meet him, weeping and pleading for mercy. They begged Angeas not to kill them or destroy their city, and he agreed. At that time, Bibentu was considered one of the cities of the children of Chittim, so he didn’t destroy it. But from that day on, troops from the king of Africa would regularly go to Chittim to raid and plunder it—and Zepho, captain of Angeas’ army, would always go with them.

Angeas marries Jania
Jasher 60:31
After this, Angeas and his army went to the city of Puzimna, where he took Jania, the daughter of Uzu, as his wife and brought her back to his city in Africa.
