Temptation

(1-minute read)

In a gripping account of divine judgment and human frailty, Adam and Eve’s defiance reverberates through the heavens, shattering the tranquility of Eden. As the serpent’s sinister whispers beckon, they succumb to temptation, their innocence shattered by the forbidden fruit. YHWH’s wrath descends upon the serpent, woman, and man, casting them into a realm of curses and exile. Yet, amidst the chaos, a glimmer of mercy shines as Adam and Eve don garments of repentance. With every heartbeat, the earth trembles with the weight of their destiny, setting the stage for an epic journey of redemption and revelation.

1 And on the six days of the second week we brought, according to the word of God, unto Adam all the beasts, and all the cattle, and all the birds, and everything that moves on the earth, and everything that moves in the water, according to their kinds, and according to their types: the beasts on the first day; the cattle on the second day; the birds on the third day; and all that which moves on the earth on the fourth day; and that which moves in the water on the fifth day.
2 And Adam named them all by their respective names, and as he called them, so was their name.

Jubilees 3:27-31

27 And on that day on which Adam went forth from the Garden, he offered as a sweet savour an offering, frankincense, galbanum, and stacte, and spices in the morning with the rising of the sun from the day when he covered his shame.

29 And He sent out of the Garden of Eden all flesh that was in the Garden of Eden, and all flesh was scattered according to its kinds, and according to its types unto the places which had been created for them.
30 And to Adam alone did He give (the wherewithal) to cover his shame, of all the beasts and cattle.
31 On this account, it is prescribed on the heavenly tablets as touching all those who know the judgment of the law, that they should cover their shame, and should not uncover themselves as the Gentiles uncover themselves.

Exposition

J: 1 | Y: 0 | M: 0 | D: 8 | YHWH observes that Adam is alone
Genesis 2:18-20, Jasher 1:3, Jubilees 3:1-4
The LORD God saw that it was not good for man to be alone and said, “I will make him a helper who is right for him.”

So the LORD made a companion for the man—a suitable helper to share his life.

Rising Action

D: 8-12 | Adam names the animals
Genesis 2:19-20, Jubilees 3:1-3
On the 6th day, the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air out of the ground and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And during the 6 days of the 2nd week, according to God’s word, we brought to Adam all the animals—beasts, cattle, birds, and every creature that moves on the earth and in the water—each according to its kind and type. The beasts came on the 1st day, the cattle on the 2nd day, the birds on the 3rd day, all land creatures on the 4th day, and the creatures of the water on the 5th day. Whatever Adam called each living creature, that became its name.

Adam gave names to all the cattle, the birds of the air, and every beast of the field. But for Adam, no suitable helper was found. He named them all according to their kinds, and whatever he called them, that was their name. During those 5 days, Adam saw all the animals, male and female, of every kind on the earth, but he remained alone and did not find a companion suitable for him.

D: 13 | Eve is created
Genesis 1:27-28, 2:21-24, 5:1-2, Jasher 1:4, 5a, 6, Jubilees 2:14, 3:5-7
Then the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept. While he was asleep, God took one of his ribs and closed the flesh around it. From the rib, the LORD God made a woman and brought her to Adam. When Adam awoke, he saw the woman standing before him.

This is the book of the generations of Adam. God created man in His image; in the image of God, He created him—male and female He created them—and He called their names Adam and Eve on the day He created them. God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and every living thing that moves on the earth.”

God gave both man and woman authority over everything on earth—over the seas, everything that flies, the beasts and cattle, all creatures that move on the ground, and over the entire earth.

Adam said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. She shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”

He recognized that she had been made from his own body.

Therefore, a man shall leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. Man and wife shall be one.

M: 3 | D: 20 | The statute of uncleanness is established
Jubilees 3:8-14
Adam was created in the 1st week, and his wife from his rib. In the 2nd week, God showed her to him. Because of this, the commandment was given to observe the time of uncleanness: 7 days for a male and 14 days for a female.

M: 4 | D: 30 | Adam enters the Garden of Eden and the uncleanness of giving birth is established
Jubilees 3:9-11
After Adam completed 40 days in the land where he was created, we brought him into the garden of Eden to tend and care for it. But his wife was brought in on the 80th day, and only after that did she enter the garden.

This is why the commandment was written on the heavenly tablets for women who give birth: “If she gives birth to a male child, she must remain in her uncleanness for 7 days, according to the first week of days. Then she shall continue in the blood of her purification for 33 days. During this time, she shall not touch anything holy or enter the sanctuary until these days are completed. If she gives birth to a female child, she must remain in her uncleanness for 14 days, and continue in the blood of her purification for 66 days—for a total of 80 days.”

M: 6 | D: 10 | Eve enters the Garden of Eden
Jubilees 3:12-14
When she had completed the full 80 days, we brought her into the garden of Eden, because it is holier than any other place on earth, and every tree planted in it is holy. Because of this, the law was established for women who bear male or female children, that they should not touch anything holy or enter the sanctuary until the appointed days for each child are completed. This is the law and testimony written for Israel, to be kept throughout all their generations.

Adam and Eve enter the Garden of Eden
Genesis 2:15-17, 25, Jasher 1:7-8, Jubilees 3:15-16
The LORD God took Adam and placed him in the garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the LORD God commanded Adam, saying, “You may freely eat from every tree in the garden, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will surely die.”

In the 1st week of the 1st jubilee, after God had blessed and instructed them, He departed from them. Adam and his wife lived in the garden as the LORD had commanded for 7 years, working and tending it. We assigned him tasks and taught him how to do all that was needed for cultivating the garden.

They were both naked—the man and his wife—but they were not ashamed. Adam worked the garden, protected it from birds, beasts, and cattle, gathered its fruit, ate from it, and stored the rest for himself and his wife, setting aside what needed to be preserved.

Climax

Y: 8 | M: 2 | D: 17 | The Serpent tests the Woman
Genesis 3:1-7, Jasher 1:9-10, Jubilees 3:17-22
After the 7 years were completed—exactly 7 years—on the 17th day of the 2nd month, the serpent, whom God had created along with them on the earth and who was more cunning than any beast of the field, came to the woman and said, “Has God really said you can’t eat from every tree in the garden?”

The woman replied to the serpent, “God told us we may eat from the fruit of all the trees in the garden, but from the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, He said, ‘You must not eat from it or even touch it, or else you will die.’”

Then the serpent tempted the woman and said, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat from it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil.”

The woman saw that the tree was good for food, appealing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it as well. Afterward, they both realized they were naked and covered themselves with fig leaves.

The eyes of both Adam and his wife were opened, and they realized they were naked. So they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves to hide their shame.

YHWH investigates
Genesis 3:8-13
They heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. The LORD God called to Adam and said, “Where are you?”

Adam answered, “I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.”

God said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”

Adam replied, “The woman you gave to be with me—she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you’ve done?”

The woman answered, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

Falling Action

YHWH issues curses
Genesis 3:14-19, Jasher 1:11, Jubilees 3:23-25
The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are cursed above all cattle and every beast of the field. You will crawl on your belly, and you will eat dust all the days of your life.”

So God cursed the serpent and remained angry with it forever. He said, “I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

Adam and his wife had broken the command God had given them. God knew this, and His anger was kindled against them, so He cursed them as well.

To the woman, God said, “I will greatly increase your pain and your conception; with sorrow, you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”

God was angry with the woman for listening to the serpent and eating from the tree. He cursed her with increased pain during childbirth and placed her under her husband’s authority.

To Adam, God said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree I commanded you not to eat from, the ground is cursed because of you. You will eat from it only through painful toil, and it will produce thorns and thistles for you. You will eat your bread by the sweat of your brow until you return to the ground from which you were taken. For dust you are, and to dust you will return.”

Adam is alone
Genesis 2:18-20, Jasher 1:3, Jubilees 3:1-4
Adam named his wife Eve because she was the mother of all the living.

YHWH clothes Adam and Eve
Genesis 3:21, Jubilees 3:26
The LORD God made garments of skins for Adam and his wife, clothed them, and sent them out from the Garden of Eden.

Resolution

YHWH banishes Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden
Genesis 3:22-24, Jasher 1:12a, Jubilees 3:35
The LORD God said, “Look, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Now, he might reach out his hand and also take from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever.”

So the LORD God expelled Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden that same day. He instructed Adam to cultivate the ground from which he had been taken, and they went to live east of the Garden of Eden. They did not have a son until the 1st jubilee.

God drove the man out, and at the east side of the Garden of Eden, He placed Cherubim and a flaming sword that turned in every direction to guard the path to the tree of life.

D: 18 | Adam offers a sacrifice, the beasts can no longer speak, beasts are banished from the garden, and only humans cover their nakedness
Jubilees 3:27-31
On the day Adam left the Garden, he made an offering as a sweet-smelling aroma—frankincense, galbanum, stacte, and spices—in the morning, as the sun rose, from the day he had covered his shame.

That same day, the mouths of all the beasts, cattle, birds, and every creature that walks or moves were closed so that they could no longer speak. Before then, they had all spoken to one another with one lip and one language.

God sent all flesh out of the Garden of Eden—every living thing—and scattered them according to their kinds and types, each to the places created for them.

Only Adam was given the means to cover his shame—unlike the beasts and cattle. For this reason, it is written on the heavenly tablets concerning all who understand the law’s judgment: they should cover their shame and not expose themselves as the Gentiles do.
