Confusion
(2-minute read)
In an age of monumental ambition and divine intervention, the people of Shinar, united by a single language, embarked on an audacious endeavor to build a tower reaching the heavens. For forty-three years, they toiled, their unity and pride growing with each ascending brick. But the Lord, descending with seventy angels, saw their hubris and confounded their language, turning harmony into chaos. Confusion reigned as workers, unable to understand one another, descended into violence and discord. The great tower of Babel crumbled, its fall a dramatic testament to mankind’s overreaching ambition, scattering the people across the earth and forever dividing them by language and strife.
Amidst the turmoil, the descendants of Noah spread far and wide, founding cities and waging wars, their lives marked by conflict and ambition. Serug, living in Ur of the Chaldees, taught his son Nahor the ancient arts of divination. As famine and malevolent spirits plagued the land, Nahor fathered Terah, who rose to prominence under the reign of the mighty Nimrod. Nimrod, having conquered his enemies, built the grand city of Shinar and ruled with an iron fist, his kingdom expanding as his wickedness grew. His rebellion against the Lord and the evil deeds of his son Mardon became legendary, a dark shadow over a world struggling to find its path.
Nimrod’s empire flourished, and Terah, esteemed by the king, fathered Haran and Nahor, continuing the lineage amidst a world in flux. The descendants of Noah, now spread across the earth, established new nations and cities, their lives interwoven with tales of ambition, conflict, and survival. As the earth repopulated after the flood, the legacy of these early generations set the stage for the unfolding drama of humanity, their stories etched into the very fabric of the world.

Genesis 11:1

The tower of Babel begins construction
Genesis 11:2-4
2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.
4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
Jasher 9:21-24
21 And all the princes of Nimrod and his great men took counsel together; Phut, Mitzraim, Cush and Canaan with their families, and they said to each other, Come let us build ourselves a city and in it a strong tower, and its top reaching heaven, and we will make ourselves famed, so that we may reign upon the whole world, in order that the evil of our enemies may cease from us, that we may reign mightily over them, and that we may not become scattered over the earth on account of their wars.
22 And they all went before the king, and they told the king these words, and the king agreed with them in this affair, and he did so.
23 And all the families assembled consisting of about six hundred thousand men, and they went to seek an extensive piece of ground to build the city and the tower, and they sought in the whole earth and they found none like one valley at the east of the land of Shinar, about two days’ walk, and they journeyed there and they dwelt there.
24 And they began to make bricks and burn fires to build the city and the tower that they had imagined to complete.
Jubilees 10:19-20
19 For they departed from the land of Ararat eastward to Shinar; for in his days they built the city and the tower, saying, ‘Go to, let us ascend thereby into heaven.’
20 And they began to build, and in the fourth week they made brick with fire, and the bricks served them for stone, and the clay with which they cemented them together was asphalt which comes out of the sea, and out of the fountains of water in the land of Shinar.
Jasher 9:25-31
25 And the building of the tower was unto them a transgression and a sin, and they began to build it, and whilst they were building against the Lord God of heaven, they imagined in their hearts to war against him and to ascend into heaven.
26 And all these people and all the families divided themselves in three parts; the first said We will ascend into heaven and fight against him; the second said, We will ascend to heaven and place our own gods there and serve them; and the third part said, We will ascend to heaven and smite him with bows and spears; and God knew all their works and all their evil thoughts, and he saw the city and the tower which they were building.
27 And when they were building they built themselves a great city and a very high and strong tower; and on account of its height the mortar and bricks did not reach the builders in their ascent to it, until those who went up had completed a full year, and after that, they reached to the builders and gave them the mortar and the bricks; thus was it done daily.
28 And behold these ascended and others descended the whole day; and if a brick should fall from their hands and get broken, they would all weep over it, and if a man fell and died, none of them would look at him.
29 And the Lord knew their thoughts, and it came to pass when they were building they cast the arrows toward the heavens, and all the arrows fell upon them filled with blood, and when they saw them they said to each other, Surely we have slain all those that are in heaven.
30 For this was from the Lord in order to cause them to err, and in order; to destroy them from off the face of the ground.
31 And they built the tower and the city, and they did this thing daily until many days and years were elapsed.

The tower of Babel falls and the confusion of languagesv, vi
Jubilees 10:21
21 And they built it: forty and three years [1645-1688 A.M.] were they building it; its breadth was 203 bricks, and the height (of a brick) was the third of one; its height amounted to 5433 cubits and 2 palms, and (the extent of one wall was) thirteen stades (and of the other thirty stades).
Genesis 11:5
5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
Jubilees 10:23
23 And the Lord descended, and we descended with him to see the city and the tower which the children of men had built.
Genesis 11:6-7
6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.
Jasher 9:32
32 And God said to the seventy angels who stood foremost before him, to those who were near to him, saying, Come let us descend and confuse their tongues, that one man shall not understand the language of his neighbor, and they did so unto them.
Jubilees 10:22
22 And the Lord our God said unto us: Behold, they are one people, and (this) they begin to do, and now nothing will be withholden from them. Go to, let us go down and confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech, and they may be dispersed into cities and nations, and one purpose will no longer abide with them till the day of judgment.’
Jasher 9:33-35
33 And from that day following, they forgot each man his neighbor’s tongue, and they could not understand to speak in one tongue, and when the builder took from the hands of his neighbor lime or stone which he did not order, the builder would cast it away and throw it upon his neighbor, that he would die.
34 And they did so many days, and they killed many of them in this manner.
35 And the Lord smote the three divisions that were there, and he punished them according to their works and designs; those who said, We will ascend to heaven and serve our gods, became like apes and elephants; and those who said, We will smite the heaven with arrows, the Lord killed them, one man through the hand of his neighbor; and the third division of those who said, We will ascend to heaven and fight against him, the Lord scattered them throughout the earth.
Genesis 11:8-9
8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
Jasher 9:36-37
36 And those who were left amongst them, when they knew and understood the evil which was coming upon them, they forsook the building, and they also became scattered upon the face of the whole earth.
37 And they ceased building the city and the tower; therefore he called that place Babel, for there the Lord confounded the Language of the whole earth; behold it was at the east of the land of Shinar.
Jubilees 10:24-25
24 And he confounded their language, and they no longer understood one another’s speech, and they ceased then to build the city and the tower.
25 For this reason the whole land of Shinar is called Babel, because the Lord did there confound all the language of the children of men, and from thence they were dispersed into their cities, each according to his language and his nation.
Jasher 9:38-39
38 And as to the tower which the sons of men built, the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up one third part thereof, and a fire also descended from heaven and burned another third, and the other third is left to this day, and it is of that part which was aloft, and its circumference is three days’ walk.
39 And many of the sons of men died in that tower, a people without number.
Jubilees 10:26
26 And the Lord sent a mighty wind against the tower and overthrew it upon the earth, and behold it was between Asshur and Babylon in the land of Shinar, and they called its name ‘Overthrow’.
Jasher 10:2-5
2 And when the Lord had scattered the sons of men on account of their sin at the tower, behold they spread forth into many divisions, and all the sons of men were dispersed into the four corners of the earth.
3 And all the families became each according to its language, its land, or its city.
4 And the sons of men built many cities according to their families, in all the places where they went, and throughout the earth where the Lord had scattered them.
5 And some of them built cities in places from which they were afterward extirpated, and they called these cities after their own names, or the names of their children, or after their particular occurrences.

30 And Ham, his father, and Cush and Mizraim his brothers said unto him: ‘Thou hast settled in a land which is not thine, and which did not fall to us by lot: do not do so; for if thou dost do so, thou and thy sons will fall in the land and (be) accursed through sedition; for by sedition ye have settled, and by sedition will thy children fall, and thou shalt be rooted out for ever.
31 Dwell not in the dwelling of Shem; for to Shem and to his sons did it come by their lot.
32 Cursed art thou, and cursed shalt thou be beyond all the sons of Noah, by the curse by which we bound ourselves by an oath in the presence of the holy judge, and in the presence of Noah our father.’
33 But he did not harken unto them, and dwelt in the land of Lebanon from Hamath to the entering of Egypt, he and his sons until this day.

War between Noah's sonsviii
Jubilees 11:2-5
2 And the sons of Noah began to war on each other, to take captive and to slay each other, and to shed the blood of men on the earth, and to eat blood, and to build strong cities, and walls, and towers, and individuals (began) to exalt themselves above the nation, and to found the beginnings of kingdoms, and to go to war people against people, and nation against nation, and city against city, and all (began) to do evil, and to acquire arms, and to teach their sons war, and they began to capture cities, and to sell male and female slaves.
3 And ‘Ûr, the son of Kesed, built the city of ‘Ara of the Chaldees, and called its name after his own name and the name of his father. And they made for themselves molten images, and they worshipped each the idol, the molten image which they had made for themselves, and they began to make graven images and unclean simulacra, and malignant spirits assisted and seduced (them) into committing transgression and uncleanness.
4 And the prince Mastêmâ exerted himself to do all this, and he sent forth other spirits, those which were put under his hand, to do all manner of wrong and sin, and all manner of transgression, to corrupt and destroy, and to shed blood upon the earth.
5 For this reason he called the name of Sêrôh, Serug, for every one turned to do all manner of sin and transgression.

Jubilees 11:10-12
10 And the prince Mastêmâ sent ravens and birds to devour the seed which was sown in the land, in order to destroy the land, and rob the children of men of their labours. Before they could plough in the seed, the ravens picked (it) from the surface of the ground.
11 And for this reason he called his name Terah because the ravens and the birds reduced them to destitution and devoured their seed.
12 And the years began to be barren, owing to the birds, and they devoured all the fruit of the trees from the trees: it was only with great effort that they could save a little of all the fruit of the earth in their days.
Nimrod reigns in Shinar
Jasher 7:40-49
40 And he set over his subjects and people, princes, judges, and rulers, as is the custom amongst kings.
41 And he placed Terah the son of Nahor the prince of his host, and he dignified him and elevated him above all his princes.
42 And whilst he was reigning according to his heart’s desire, after having conquered all his enemies around, he advised with his counselors to build a city for his palace, and they did so.
43 And they found a large valley opposite to the east, and they built him a large and extensive city, and Nimrod called the name of the city that he built Shinar, for the Lord had vehemently shaken his enemies and destroyed them.
44 And Nimrod dwelt in Shinar, and he reigned securely, and he fought with his enemies and he subdued them, and he prospered in all his battles, and his kingdom became very great.
45 And all nations and tongues heard of his fame, and they gathered themselves to him, and they bowed down to the earth, and they brought him offerings, and he became their lord and king, and they all dwelt with him in the city at Shinar, and Nimrod reigned in the earth over all the sons of Noah, and they were all under his power and counsel.
46 And all the earth was of one tongue and words of union, but Nimrod did not go in the ways of the Lord, and he was more wicked than all the men that were before him, from the days of the flood until those days.
47 And he made gods of wood and stone, and he bowed down to them, and he rebelled against the Lord, and taught all his subjects and the people of the earth his wicked ways; and Mardon his son was more wicked than his father.
48 And every one that heard of the acts of Mardon the son of Nimrod would say, concerning him, From the wicked goeth forth wickedness; therefore it became a proverb in the whole earth, saying, From the wicked goeth forth wickedness, and it was current in the words of men from that time to this.
49 And Terah the son of Nahor, prince of Nimrod’s host, was in those days very great in the sight of the king and his subjects, and the king and princes loved him, and they elevated him very high.

i. Jubilees 10:18 places Peleg’s marriage to Lomna in 1576 and Reu’s birth in 1579 which is 18 years prior to when Genesis would place it.
ii. It’s estimated that the fifth generation after the flood was born between 1786-1813.
iii. Jubilees 11:1 places Reu’s marriage to Ora in 1681 and Serug’s birth in 1687 which is 9 years after Genesis places it.
iv. It’s estimated that the sixth generation after the flood was born between 1814-1848.
v. It’s worth noting that Jasher 9:38 says that the tower of babel fell due to a sinkhole and fire whereas Jubilees 10:26 says that it was from wind.
vi. Jubilees 10:27 lists the year 1688 as the 1st year of the 4th week of the 34th jubilee, but it should be listed as the 35th jubilee.
vii. It makes sense that this event would occur immediately after the fall of the tower of Babel.
viii. Jubilees 11:5 states that Serug received his name from this event. When we take into account that Jubilees places Serug’s birth in the year before the tower of Babel fell, the year 1832 makes sense for this event.
ix. It’s estimated that the seventh generation after the flood was born between 1849-1876.
x. Jubilees 11:6-7 places Serug’s marriage to Melka and the birth of Nahor in 1744 which is 27 years after Genesis places it.
xi. Jubilees 11:8-9 places Nahor’s marriage to Ijaska in 1800 and Terah’s birth in 1806 which is 33 years after Genesis places it.
xii. It’s estimated that the eighth generation after the flood was born between 1877-1911.
xiii. It’s estimated that the ninth generation after the flood was born between 1912-1946.

Rising Action
The tower of Babel begins construction
Genesis 11:1-4, Jasher 9:20-31, Jubilees 10:19-20
All of Nimrod’s princes and his great men—Phut, Mitzraim, Cush, and Canaan—gathered with their families and said to one another, “Come, let’s build a city for ourselves with a strong tower whose top reaches the heavens. We’ll make a name for ourselves so we can rule over the entire world. This way, the harm from our enemies will end, and we’ll have power over them. We won’t be scattered across the earth because of their wars.”
They went to the king with this plan, and he agreed. About 600,000 people gathered together and searched across the earth for a large enough area to build the city and tower. Eventually, they found a valley to the east in the land of Shinar, about a 2-day walk away. They moved there and settled.
They began building in the 4th week. They made bricks by firing them, and used them as stone. The clay they used to bind the bricks was asphalt, which came from the sea and the water fountains in the land of Shinar.
Their building project was considered a transgression and a sin, because they were doing it in defiance of the Lord God of heaven. In their hearts, they imagined they could wage war against Him and climb up into heaven.
All the people divided themselves into 3 groups: the 1st group said, “We will climb to heaven and fight Him”; the 2nd said, “We will go up and place our own gods there to serve them”; and the 3rd said, “We will ascend and attack Him with bows and spears.” God saw all their actions and the evil intentions in their hearts. He watched the city and the tower they were building.
As they built the city and the massive, strong tower, it grew so tall that the bricks and mortar no longer reached the builders at the top. It took a full year for the materials to be delivered to the top after being sent up. This process happened every day—some people ascended while others came back down. If a brick fell and broke, everyone mourned over it. But if a man fell and died, no one paid any attention to him.
The Lord saw what they were thinking, and while they were still building, they shot arrows into the sky. All the arrows came back down covered in blood, and when they saw them, they said to each other, “Surely we’ve killed everyone in heaven.” This was done by the Lord to lead them astray and ultimately to destroy them from the face of the earth.
They continued building the city and the tower like this, day after day, for many days and years.
Y: 1788 | Reu is born
Genesis 11:18, Jasher 7:22a, Jubilees 10:18b
When Peleg was 30 years old, in the 4th year of that week, Lomna gave birth to a son. He named him Reu, saying, “Look, the children of men have become wicked because of their evil purpose in building a city and a tower for themselves in the land of Shinar.”
Y: 1786-1813 | Fifth generation after the flood is born
Genesis 10:26-29, Jasher 7:21
Joktan fathered Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, Obal, Abimael, Sheba, Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. These were all sons of Joktan. They lived in the region that stretches from Mesha toward Sephar, the eastern mountain.
J: 38 | Y: 1814 | Reu marries Ora
Jubilees 11:1a
In the 35th jubilee, during the 3rd week in the 1st year, Reu took a wife named Ôrâ, the daughter of Ûr, who was the son of Kesed.
Y: 1820 | Serug born
Genesis 11:20, Jasher 7:22b, Jubilees 11:1b
Reu was 32 years old when Ôrâ gave birth to a son. He named him Sêrôh, and this happened in the 7th year of that week during this jubilee.
Climax
Y: 1830 | The tower of Babel falls and the confusion of languages
Genesis 11:5-9, Jasher 9:32-39, 10:2-5, Jubilees 10:21-27
They worked on building the tower for 43 years. It was 203 bricks wide, with each brick being one-third the size of a unit. The tower reached a height of 5,433 cubits and 2 palms. One wall measured 13 stades, and another stretched 30 stades.
The Lord came down, and we came down with Him to see the city and the tower that the people had built.
The Lord said, “Look, the people are united and speak the same language. And this is what they’ve started to do? Now nothing they plan will be impossible for them.”
Then God spoke to the 70 angels closest to Him, saying, “Come, let us go down and confuse their language so that no one will understand what his neighbor is saying.” And they did just that.
From that day on, each person forgot his neighbor’s language. They could no longer communicate. When one builder received lime or stone from another that he hadn’t asked for, he would throw it at the other in frustration, sometimes killing him. This went on for many days, and many were killed in this way.
Then the Lord struck the three divisions of people there, punishing them according to their intentions. Those who had said, “We will go up to heaven and serve our gods,” were turned into creatures like apes and elephants. Those who said, “We will attack heaven with arrows,” were killed by their own companions. The third group, who said, “We will ascend and fight against Him,” were scattered across the earth by the Lord.
Those who remained, realizing the judgment that had come upon them, abandoned the project. They too were scattered over the face of the whole earth.
They stopped building the city and the tower. That place was named Babel because the Lord confused the language of the whole earth there. It was located in the eastern part of the land of Shinar.
As for the tower the people had built, the earth opened up and swallowed one-third of it. Another third was burned by fire from heaven. The remaining third still exists today; it was the top part. The tower’s circumference is a 3-day walk. Many people died in the tower—so many they couldn’t be counted. Then the Lord sent a powerful wind against the tower, knocking it to the ground. It landed between Asshur and Babylon in the land of Shinar, and the place was called “Overthrow.”
After the Lord scattered humanity because of their sin at the tower, they divided into many groups. They spread out to the four corners of the earth. Each family settled in different lands and cities, based on their own languages. People built many cities wherever they went, in all the areas to which the Lord had scattered them. Some of these cities were later destroyed, but they had been named after the builders themselves, their children, or significant events in their lives.
Y: 1831 | Cities are built
Genesis 11:10-11, Jasher 10:7-39, Jubilees 10:28-36
The sons of Ham—Cush, Mitzraim, Phut, and Canaan—each built cities wherever they found suitable land in the south. They named their cities after themselves.
Canaan saw that the land stretching from Lebanon to the river of Egypt was very good, so he chose not to go to his rightful inheritance in the west, by the sea. Instead, he settled in Lebanon, both east and west of the Jordan border and near the coast.
His father Ham, along with his brothers Cush and Mitzraim, said to him, “You’ve settled in land that isn’t yours—it wasn’t allotted to us. Don’t do this. If you stay, both you and your children will be cursed and eventually driven out, because you’ve taken it by rebellion, and rebellion will cause your fall. You’ll be rooted out forever. Don’t live in the territory of Shem, for it was given to Shem and his descendants. You are cursed—cursed more than any of Noah’s sons—because of the oath we swore before the Holy Judge and our father Noah.”
But Canaan didn’t listen. He lived in the land of Lebanon from Hamath to the border of Egypt, he and his sons, up to this day. That’s why the land is called Canaan.
The descendants of Mitzraim were the Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuchim, Pathrusim, Casluchim, and Caphturim—7 families. They lived by the river Sihor, also known as the brook of Egypt. Each family built cities and named them after themselves. The children of Pathros and Casluch intermarried, and from them came the Pelishtim, Azathim, Gerarim, Githim, and Ekronim—5 families in total. They too built cities and named them after their ancestors. The children of Canaan also built cities—11 in total—and many others beyond counting, naming them after themselves.
Four men from Ham’s family—Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboyim—went to the land of the plain. Each built a city named after himself. They, their children, and all their households lived in those cities. They prospered, multiplied, and lived in peace.
Seir, the son of Hur (who was the son of Hivi, son of Canaan), found a valley near Mount Paran. He built a city there and lived in it with his 7 sons and household. He named the city Seir, after himself. That’s the land of Seir today. These were the families of Ham’s descendants, according to their languages and cities, after they were scattered from the tower.
The sons of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Medai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. They lived in their own regions, according to their generations.
Japheth and his sons moved toward the sea and settled in their allotted lands. But Madai didn’t like the coastal land. He asked Ham, Asshur, and his brother-in-law Arpachshad for a portion and settled in the land of Media, near his wife’s brother. He named the place—and his sons did too—Media, after himself.
Gomer’s descendants built cities, and they were called the Francum. They live in Franza, by the rivers Franza and Senah.
Rephath’s children were the Bartonim. They settled in Bartonia, by the river Ledah, which flows into the great sea Gihon, also called Oceanus.
Togarmah’s descendants formed 10 families: Buzar, Parzunac, Balgar, Elicanum, Ragbib, Tarki, Bid, Zebuc, Ongal, and Tilmaz. They moved north and built cities, naming them after themselves. These cities are still located along the rivers Hithlah and Italac.
The families of Angoli, Balgar, and Parzunac live by the great river Dubnee, and their cities are also named after themselves.
Javan’s descendants, the Javanim, live in the land of Makdonia. Medai’s children, the Orelum, live in Curson. Tubal’s children settled in Tuskanah by the river Pashiah.
Meshech’s children are the Shibashni, and Tiras’s children are Rushash, Cushni, and Ongolis. They all built cities near the sea Jabus, by the river Cura, which flows into the Tragan river.
Elishah’s children, the Almanim, also built cities. These are found between the mountains of Job and Shibathmo. Among them are the people of Lumbardi, who live opposite those mountains. They conquered the land of Italia and still live there.
Chittim’s children are the Romim, who live in the valley of Canopia by the river Tibreu.
Dudonim’s children live in cities along the sea Gihon, in the land of Bordna. These are the families of Japheth’s descendants, organized by their cities and languages after they were scattered from the tower. They named their cities after themselves or significant events in their lives.
Some of Shem’s children, the father of all Eber’s descendants, also built cities where they had been scattered. The sons of Shem were Elam, Ashur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram. Each built cities and named them after themselves.
Ashur and a large group of his descendants left and traveled to a distant land. There they found a wide valley and built four cities, named after themselves or significant events. These cities were Nineveh, Resen, Calah, and Rehobother, and Ashur’s descendants still live there today.
Aram’s descendants also built a city. They named it Uz, after their oldest brother. That’s still the land of Uz today.
In the 2nd year after the tower, a man named Bela, from Ashur’s family, left Nineveh with his household in search of a new home. They arrived opposite the cities of the plain near Sodom and settled there. Bela built a small city and named it after himself. That land is now called Zoar. These are the families of Shem’s descendants, grouped by their languages and cities, after they were scattered from the tower.
After that, each kingdom, city, and family among Noah’s descendants built many cities. They established governments in every city, to keep order. This practice continued among all Noah’s descendants forever.
Y: 1832 | War between Noah’s sons
Jubilees 11:2-5
Noah’s sons began fighting each other—taking captives, killing one another, spilling blood, and even eating it. They built fortified cities with walls and towers. Individuals began to rise above others, creating the first kingdoms. People went to war—nation against nation, city against city. Everyone started doing evil. They began crafting weapons and teaching their children how to fight. Cities were conquered, and people began selling men and women as slaves.
‘Ûr, the son of Kesed, built the city of ‘Ara of the Chaldees, naming it after himself and his father. People made molten idols and began worshipping them. Each one worshipped the image he had made for himself. They carved images and made impure representations. Evil spirits led them into sin and impurity. The prince Mastêmâ worked hard to cause this. He sent out more spirits under his command to spread evil, sin, destruction, and bloodshed across the earth. That’s why the name of Sêrôh was called Serug—because everyone had turned to wickedness and corruption.
Y: 1850 | Serug marries Melka
Jubilees 11:6
Serug grew up in Ur of the Chaldees, near the family of his wife’s mother. He worshipped idols. He married in the 36th jubilee, in the 5th week, in the 1st year. His wife was Melka, the daughter of Kaber, who was the daughter of Serug’s father’s brother.
Falling Action
Nahor born
Genesis 11:22, Jasher 7:22c, Jubilees 11:7
When Serug was 30 years old, Melka gave birth to Nahor in the 1st year of that week. Nahor grew up and lived in Ur of the Chaldees. His father taught him the Chaldean practices of divination and reading omens based on the signs in the sky.
J: 39 | Y: 1873 | Nahor marries Ijaska
Jubilees 11:8
In the 37th Jubilee, during the 6th week, in the 1st year, Nahor married a woman named Ijaska. She was the daughter of Nestag of the Chaldees.
Y: 1879 | Terah born
Genesis 11:24, Jasher 7:22d, Jubilees 11:9
When Nahor was 29 years old, Ijaska gave birth to Terah in the 7th year of that week.
The birds devour the seeds and fruit of the trees
Jubilees 11:10-12
The prince Mastêmâ sent ravens and other birds to eat the seeds that were sown in the land, ruining the land and stealing the labor of the people. Before they could even plow in the seeds, the birds would pick them off the ground. Because of this, he named the child Terah, as the ravens and birds brought poverty and ate the people’s seed. The land became increasingly barren because of the birds, which also devoured the fruit from the trees. Only with great difficulty were they able to save even a small portion of the earth’s produce during those days.
Resolution
Nimrod reigns in Shinar
Jasher 7:40-49
Nimrod appointed princes, judges, and rulers over his people, just as other kings do. He made Terah, son of Nahor, the commander of his army, honoring him and elevating him above all the other princes. After defeating all his enemies and ruling as he pleased, Nimrod consulted his advisors about building a city for his palace, and they agreed. They found a wide valley to the east and built a large and expansive city there. Nimrod named the city Shinar, because the Lord had forcefully overthrown his enemies. Nimrod lived in Shinar, where he ruled in peace. He fought and conquered his enemies, succeeding in every battle, and his kingdom grew powerful. People from all nations and languages heard of his fame. They came to him, bowed before him, brought him gifts, and made him their king and lord. They all settled in the city of Shinar. Nimrod ruled over all the descendants of Noah, and everyone was under his authority and guidance.
At that time, the whole earth spoke one language and shared common speech. But Nimrod did not follow the ways of the Lord. He was more wicked than any man since the flood. He made idols out of wood and stone, bowed down to them, rebelled against the Lord, and taught his people to do the same. His son Mardon was even more wicked than he was. Everyone who heard about Mardon’s actions would say, “From the wicked comes wickedness.” This saying became a well-known proverb throughout the world and has been repeated ever since. During these days, Terah, son of Nahor and commander of Nimrod’s army, was highly respected by the king and his officials. They all admired and greatly promoted him.
J: 40 | Y: 1917 | Haran and Nahor born
Genesis 10:30-32, Jasher 7:18, 22e
When Terah was 38 years old, he had two sons: Haran and Nahor. These were descendants of Shem, each according to their families, languages, lands, and nations. At that time, their numbers were about 300 men.
These are the families that came from the sons of Noah, grouped by their generations and nations. From them, the nations were spread out across the earth after the flood.
