Disaster
(1-minute read)
In a time when power struggles and alliances shaped kingdoms, the children of Esau resolved to break away from internal strife by crowning a foreign king, Bela, a man wise and valiant, who would lead them with strength and wealth. Meanwhile, in Egypt, Joseph, beloved by the people, was entrusted with all authority by the Pharaoh, expanding his rule across lands and subduing enemies with divine favor, establishing peace for Israel. Yet, a simmering enmity brewed as Esau’s descendants, after years of peace, sought revenge on the Israelites, amassing a vast army for battle. But Joseph, with his brothers and the might of Egypt, crushed their foes, quelling the threat and restoring peace, while the sons of Israel flourished and multiplied, bound by unity and blessed by divine favor during Joseph’s reign.

15 And these are the kings that reigned in Edom before there reigned any king over the children of Israel [until this day] in the land of Edom.
The children of Esau anointed Bela as their king
Jasher 57:38-43
38 And it came to pass in those days, that the children of Esau resolved to crown a king over them in the land of which they became possessed. And they said to each other, Not so, for he shall reign over us in our land, and we shall be under his counsel and he shall fight our battles, against our enemies, and they did so.
39 And all the children of Esau swore, saying, That none of their brethren should ever reign over them, but a strange man who is not of their brethren, for the souls of all the children of Esau were embittered every man against his son, brother and friend, on account of the evil they sustained from their brethren when they fought with the children of Seir.
40 Therefore the sons of Esau swore, saying, From that day forward they would not choose a king from their brethren, but one from a strange land unto this day.
41 And there was a man there from the people of Angeas king of Dinhabah; his name was Bela the son of Beor, who was a very valiant man, beautiful and comely and wise in all wisdom, and a man of sense and counsel; and there was none of the people of Angeas like unto him.
42 And all the children of Esau took him and anointed him and they crowned him for a king, and they bowed down to him, and they said unto him, May the king live, may the king live.
43 And they spread out the sheet, and they brought him each man earrings of gold and silver or rings or bracelets, and they made him very rich in silver and in gold, in onyx stones and bdellium, and they made him a royal throne, and they placed a regal crown upon his head, and they built a palace for him and he dwelt therein, and he became king over all the children of Esau.
Genesis 36:32
32 And Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom: and the name of his city was Dinhabah.

Jasher 57:44-45
44 And the people of Angeas took their hire for their battle from the children of Esau, and they went and returned at that time to their master in Dinhabah.
45 And Bela reigned over the children of Esau thirty years, and the children of Esau dwelt in the land instead of the children of Seir, and they dwelt securely in their stead unto this day.

Pharaoh died and Magron his son reigns as Pharaohii
Jasher 58:1-4
1 And it came to pass in the thirty-second year of the Israelites going down to Egypt, that is in the seventy-first year of the life of Joseph, in that year died Pharaoh king of Egypt, and Magron his son reigned in his stead.
2 And Pharaoh commanded Joseph before his death to be a father to his son, Magron, and that Magron should be under the care of Joseph and under his counsel.
3 And all Egypt consented to this thing that Joseph should be king over them, for all the Egyptians loved Joseph as of heretofore, only Magron the son of Pharaoh sat upon, his father’s throne, and he became king in those days in his father’s stead.
4 Magron was forty-one years old when he began to reign, and forty years he reigned in Egypt, and all Egypt called his name Pharaoh after the name of his father, as it was their custom to do in Egypt to every king that reigned over them.

6 And Joseph became king over Egypt, for he superintended over all Egypt, and all Egypt was under his care and under his counsel, for all Egypt inclined to Joseph after the death of Pharaoh, and they loved him exceedingly to reign over them.
7 But there were some people amongst them, who did not like him, saying, No stranger shall reign over us; still the whole government of Egypt devolved in those days upon Joseph, after the death of Pharaoh, he being the regulator, doing as he liked throughout the land without any one interfering.
8 And all Egypt was under the care of Joseph, and Joseph made war with all his surrounding enemies, and he subdued them; also all the land and all the Philistines, unto the borders of Canaan, did Joseph subdue, and they were all under his power and they gave a yearly tax unto Joseph.
9 And Pharaoh king of Egypt sat upon his throne in his father’s stead, but he was under the control and counsel of Joseph, as he was at first under the control of his father.
10 Neither did he reign but in the land of Egypt only, under the counsel of Joseph, but Joseph reigned over the whole country at that time, from Egypt unto the great river Perath.
11 And Joseph was successful in all his ways, and the Lord was with him, and the Lord gave Joseph additional wisdom, and honor, and glory, and love toward him in the hearts of the Egyptians and throughout the land, and Joseph reigned over the whole country forty years.
12 And all the countries of the Philistines and Canaan and Zidon, and on the other side of Jordan, brought presents unto Joseph all his days, and the whole country was in the hand of Joseph, and they brought unto him a yearly tribute as it was regulated, for Joseph had fought against all his surrounding enemies and subdued them, and the whole country was in the hand of Joseph, and Joseph sat securely upon his throne in Egypt.
13 And also all his brethren the sons of Jacob dwelt securely in the land, all the days of Joseph, and they were fruitful and multiplied exceedingly in the land, and they served the Lord all their days, as their father Jacob had commanded them.

19 And the Lord gave all the mighty men of Esau and the children of the east into the hand of Joseph and his brethren, and the people of the children of Esau and the children of the east were smitten before Joseph.
20 And of the people of Esau and the children of the east that were slain, there fell before the sons of Jacob about two hundred thousand men, and their king Bela the son of Beor fell with them in the battle, and when the children of Esau saw that their king had fallen in battle and was dead, their hands became weak in the combat.

i. It seems like the more consistent time scale is when the Israelites arrived in Egypt, which was the year 2243. I’ll refer to this in the comments section as, “Israelites entering Egypt time scale”.
ii. By using the “Israelites entering Egypt time scale”, this would mean that Joseph is 70, not 71.
iii. Concerning Simeon’s children in Jasher 59:8, Jasher 45:2-3 says that Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zochar were born from Dinah and that Saul was born from Bunah, the Canaanitish woman.
iv. According to Genesis 50:22, 26, Jasher 59:20, 26, and Jubilees 46:3, Joseph was 110 when he died but according to the “Israelites entering Egypt time scale” Joseph was 109 when he died.

Exposition
J: 47 | Y: 2262 | The beginning of the kings over Edom
Genesis 36:31, Jubilees 38:15
These are the kings who ruled in the land of Edom before there was any king over the children of Israel.
The children of Esau anointed Bela as their king
Genesis 36:32, Jasher 57:38-45, Jubilees 38:16
During those days, the children of Esau decided to crown a king over themselves in the land they had taken possession of. They said to each other, “Let’s do this, so he will rule over us in our land, guide us with his counsel, and lead us in battle against our enemies.” And so they did.
All the children of Esau made a vow that none of their own brothers would ever rule over them. Instead, they would choose a foreigner. Every man was bitter toward his own son, brother, and friend because of the harm they had suffered from their own people during the war with the children of Seir. From that day on, they swore never to appoint one of their own as king, but always someone from a different land—and they kept that promise up to the present day.
At that time, there was a man from among the people of Angeas, king of Dinhabah. His name was Bela, the son of Beor. He was a brave man, handsome and wise, intelligent, and full of good judgment. There was no one like him among the people of Angeas. So all the children of Esau chose him, anointed him, and crowned him king. They bowed before him and said, “Long live the king! Long live the king!”
They laid out a sheet and each man gave him gold and silver earrings, rings, or bracelets. They made him extremely wealthy with silver, gold, onyx stones, and bdellium. They crafted a royal throne for him, placed a crown on his head, and built him a palace where he lived as king over all the children of Esau. Bela (also called Balaq), son of Beor, ruled in Edom, and his city was named Dinhabah (Danaba).
The people of Angeas received their wages for the battle from the children of Esau and returned to their master in Dinhabah. Bela ruled over the children of Esau for 30 years. During that time, the children of Esau lived in the land formerly held by the children of Seir, and they remained there in peace up to the present day.
Y: 2274 | Pharaoh died and Magron his son reigns as Pharaoh
Jasher 58:1-4
In the 32nd year since the Israelites came to Egypt, which was the 71st year of Joseph’s life, Pharaoh, king of Egypt, died, and his son Magron took his place. Before he died, Pharaoh had commanded Joseph to be like a father to Magron, so that Magron would be under Joseph’s guidance and advice. All of Egypt agreed that Joseph should be like a king over them, because they had always loved him. Although Magron, the son of Pharaoh, sat on his father’s throne and officially became king, Joseph essentially ruled in his place. Magron was 41 years old when he began to reign, and he ruled in Egypt for 40 years. As was the custom in Egypt, they called him Pharaoh, just like his father.
Pharaoh entrusts Joseph with Egypt’s governance for 40 years
Jasher 58:5-13
After Pharaoh began to rule in place of his father, he handed over Egypt’s laws and all governmental affairs to Joseph, just as his father had instructed. Joseph became the true ruler of Egypt, overseeing everything. All of Egypt was under his guidance and counsel, and they gladly supported him after Pharaoh’s death, loving him deeply and wanting him to rule over them.
However, some people were unhappy, saying, “A foreigner should not rule over us.”
Still, Joseph remained in charge of the entire government. After Pharaoh’s death, Joseph ran everything as he pleased, without interference. Egypt was entirely under his authority. He also led military campaigns against all nearby enemies and defeated them. He subdued all the surrounding lands, including the Philistines, up to the borders of Canaan. All those territories came under his control and paid him a yearly tax.
Pharaoh continued to sit on the throne of Egypt, but he followed Joseph’s guidance, just as he had followed his father’s. He ruled only within Egypt, while Joseph ruled over the whole country, from Egypt to the great Euphrates River.
Joseph succeeded in everything he did, and the Lord was with him. The Lord gave him even more wisdom, honor, glory, and love in the eyes of the Egyptians and throughout the land. Joseph ruled over the entire region for 40 years. The Philistines, the Canaanites, the people of Zidon, and those beyond the Jordan brought him gifts all his life. The whole region was in his hands, and they paid him annual tribute as had been established. Joseph had fought and defeated all his enemies, securing control over the whole land. He sat confidently on the throne in Egypt.
All his brothers, the sons of Jacob, also lived safely in the land during Joseph’s lifetime. They had many children and prospered greatly, faithfully serving the Lord as their father Jacob had commanded.

Y: 2292 | The children of Esau recruit an army to battle the sons of Jacob in Rameses
Jasher 58:14-17
Many years later, while the children of Esau were peacefully living in their land with Bela as their king, they grew in number and strength. They decided to go to war against the sons of Jacob and all Egypt to free their brother Zepho, the son of Eliphaz, and his men, who were still slaves to Joseph.
The children of Esau reached out to all the children of the east and made peace with them. The eastern tribes agreed to join the Esauites in their battle against Egypt. People from the land of Angeas, king of Dinhabah, also joined them. In addition, they sent messages to the children of Ishmael, who also came to support them.
This massive assembly gathered in Seir to help the children of Esau in their campaign. The army was vast, as numerous as the sand of the sea—about 800,000 men, including both infantry and cavalry. They all marched down to Egypt to fight against the sons of Jacob and set up camp near Rameses.
Climax
They battle and the children of Esau lose
Jasher 58:18-20
Joseph went out with his brothers and the elite troops of Egypt—about 600 men—and they fought in the land of Rameses. At that time, the sons of Jacob once again fought the children of Esau. This took place in the 50th year since the sons of Jacob had gone down to Egypt, which was also the 30th year of Bela’s reign over the children of Esau in Seir.
The Lord handed over all the warriors of Esau and the children of the east to Joseph and his brothers. They struck them down, and around 200,000 of the people of Esau and the children of the east were killed. Their king, Bela son of Beor, also fell in the battle. When the children of Esau saw their king had died, they lost their strength and will to fight.
Esau’s people retreat and the children of Jacob pursue them and kill them
Jasher 58:21-23
Joseph, his brothers, and the Egyptians continued to attack the people of Esau, and Esau’s people became terrified of the sons of Jacob and fled. Joseph, his brothers, and the Egyptians chased them for a full day and killed about 300 more men along the way. After that, they turned back. Joseph and his brothers all returned safely to Egypt—none of them were lost—but 12 Egyptians died in the battle.
Falling Action
Zepho and the other captives are put in harsher conditions
Jasher 58:24
When Joseph returned to Egypt, he gave orders to place Zepho and his men under heavier restraints. They were bound in irons, and their suffering was increased.
The remaining people of Esau retreat to Seir
Jasher 58:25
All the remaining people of the children of Esau and the children of the east returned to their own cities in shame, because all their mighty men had died in the battle.
Resolution
Jobab reigns over the children of Esau
Genesis 36:33, Jasher 58:26-28, Jubilees 38:17
When the children of Esau saw that their king Bela (Balaq) had died in battle, they quickly appointed a man from among the children of the east named Jobab, son of Zerah (Zarach/Zara), from the land of Bozrah (Botzrah/Boser), to be their new king in Bela’s place.
Jobab took Bela’s throne and reigned as king in Edom over all the children of Esau for 10 years. From that point on, the children of Esau never fought against the sons of Jacob again. They recognized the strength of Jacob’s descendants and were deeply afraid of them. However, from that time forward, they also hated the sons of Jacob, and the hostility and hatred between them remained strong to this very day.

After 10 years, Jobab son of Zarach from Botzrah died, and the children of Esau appointed a man named Husham (Chusham/’Asam), from the land of Temani (Teman), to be king in his place. Husham reigned in Edom over all the children of Esau for 20 years.
During those days, Joseph, king of Egypt, his brothers, and all the children of Israel lived safely and peacefully in Egypt. They had no troubles or misfortunes, and Egypt remained at peace during the time of Joseph and his brothers.

Y: 2313 | The children of Israel dwelled in one accord in Egypt for 70 years
Jubilees 46:1-2
After Jacob died, the children of Israel greatly multiplied in Egypt and became a large nation. They lived in harmony—each brother loved the other, and everyone supported one another. They continued to increase and grow for 70 years, all through Joseph’s lifetime. During that time, there was no evil or influence of Satan, because all the Egyptians honored the Israelites while Joseph lived.
Joseph lived for 110 years
Genesis 50:22, Jasher 59:20, Jubilees 46:3
Joseph lived for 110 years. He spent 17 years in the land of Canaan, 10 years as a servant, 3 years in prison, and 80 years serving under the king, ruling over all Egypt.
Joseph calls his family to visit him
Genesis 50:23, Jasher 59:21
As Joseph neared the end of his life, he sent for his brothers and all his father’s household. They all came and sat with him.
Joseph lived to see Ephraim’s children up to the 3rd generation. The children of Machir, son of Manasseh, were raised on Joseph’s knees.
Joseph prophesies that his family will inherit the promised land
Genesis 50:24, Jasher 59:22
Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s entire household, “Behold, I am about to die, but God will surely come to help you and bring you up from this land to the land He swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
Joseph makes his family swear that they will bring his bones into the promised land
Genesis 50:25, Jasher 59:23-24, Jubilees 46:5-7
“And when God comes to help you and bring you up from here to your fathers’ land, you must take my bones with you.”
Joseph had the sons of Israel swear this on behalf of their descendants, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you will carry my bones up with you from here.”
He made them swear this because he knew the Egyptians wouldn’t allow his body to be buried in Canaan again. This was because Makamaron, king of Canaan, while living in Assyria, had fought the king of Egypt in a valley, killed him, and chased the Egyptians all the way to the gates of ‘Ermon. But he couldn’t enter, because a new king had taken over Egypt who was stronger than him. So he returned to Canaan, and the gates of Egypt were shut—no one could leave or enter.
Joseph died, was embalmed, put into a coffin, and buried by the river Sihor
Genesis 50:26, Jasher 59:25-27, Jubilees 46:4, 8
Later that year, Joseph died. It was the 71st year since the Israelites had come to Egypt. Joseph was 110 years old when he died, during the 46th jubilee, in the 6th week, and in the 2nd year. His brothers and servants embalmed him according to custom, and Egypt mourned him for 70 days.
They placed his body in a coffin filled with spices and perfumes and buried him by the river Sihor. His sons, brothers, and all his father’s household mourned for 7 days.
The governance of Egypt transferred to Pharaoh and the Egyptians began to rule over the Israelites
Jasher 59:28
After Joseph’s death, the Egyptians began to rule over the children of Israel. Pharaoh, who succeeded his father as king of Egypt, took control of all Egypt’s laws and governed the land by his own counsel. He ruled firmly over his people.
