Declaration
(1-minute read)
In the final days of his life, Jacob, the patriarch of Israel, gathers his family for a dramatic farewell in Egypt. Facing death, he commands his sons to return his body to the ancestral land of Canaan and foretells their future, blessing each son with a powerful, prophetic vision of their legacy and trials. As Jacob lays his hands on Joseph’s sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, he defies custom, blessing the younger over the elder and prophesying their greatness. With profound wisdom, he urges his sons to uphold God’s ways, promising divine deliverance in times of future adversity, before peacefully passing, entrusting their destiny to the hands of his son Levi and the Lord.

9 And Joseph said unto his father, They are my sons, whom God hath given me in this place. And he said, Bring them, I pray thee, unto me, and I will bless them.
10 Now the eyes of Israel were dim for age, so that he could not see. And he brought them near unto him; and he kissed them, and embraced them.
11 And Israel said unto Joseph, I had not thought to see thy face: and, lo, God hath shewed me also thy seed.
12 And Joseph brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth.
13 And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near unto him.
14 And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the firstborn.
15 And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day,
16 The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.
17 And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: and he held up his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head unto Manasseh’s head.
18 And Joseph said unto his father, Not so, my father: for this is the firstborn; put thy right hand upon his head.
19 And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.
20 And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

12 Judah, Issachar and Zebulun shall carry my bier at the eastern side; Reuben, Simeon and Gad at the south, Ephraim, Manasseh and Benjamin at the west, Dan, Asher and Naphtali at the north.
13 Let not Levi carry with you, for he and his sons will carry the ark of the covenant of the Lord with the Israelites in the camp, neither let Joseph my son carry, for as a king so let his glory be; howbeit, Ephraim and Manasseh shall be in their stead.

18 And O my son leave not thy brethren to the inhabitants of Egypt, neither hurt their feelings, for behold I consign them to the hand of God and in thy hand to guard them from the Egyptians; and the sons of Jacob answered their father saying, O, our father, all that thou hast commanded us, so will we do; may God only be with us.

Jacob asks Joseph to bury him in Machpelah
Genesis 47:29-31, Jasher 56:2-5
Around that time, Jacob fell ill with the sickness that would lead to his death. He sent for his son Joseph, who came from Egypt to see him. When Joseph arrived, Jacob spoke to him and his sons, saying, “Look, I’m about to die. But the God of your ancestors will visit you and bring you back to the land that the Lord promised to give to you and your children after you. If I’ve found favor in your eyes, please put your hand under my thigh and promise to show me kindness and truth—do not bury me in Egypt. When I die, bury me in the cave in Machpelah, in Hebron, in the land of Canaan, where my ancestors are buried.”
Jacob made his sons swear to bury him in the cave at Machpelah in Hebron, and they all made an oath to him. Then Israel bowed himself at the head of his bed.
He also told them, “Serve the Lord your God, because the one who saved your fathers will also save you from all trouble.”

Genesis 48:1-2
After these things happened, someone told Joseph, “Look, your father is sick.” So Joseph took his 2 sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, with him. Then someone came to Jacob and said, “Your son Joseph is here to see you.”

Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me. He told me, ‘I will make you fruitful and multiply you. I will turn you into a multitude of people and give this land to your descendants after you as an everlasting possession.’ Now your 2 sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were born to you in Egypt before I came here, are mine—just like Reuben and Simeon, they belong to me. Any children you have after them will be yours, and they will be counted under the names of their brothers when it comes to inheritance. As for me, when I was coming from Padan, Rachel died beside me in the land of Canaan on the way, not far from Ephrath. I buried her there on the road to Ephrath—that’s Bethlehem.”

Jacob blesses Manasseh and Ephraim
Genesis 48:8-22
When Israel saw Joseph’s sons, he asked, “Who are these?”
Joseph answered, “These are my sons, the ones God has given me here.”
Jacob said, “Bring them here, please, so I can bless them.”
Israel’s eyesight had grown dim with age, and he couldn’t see well. Joseph brought the boys close, and Jacob kissed and embraced them. Israel said to Joseph, “I never thought I’d see your face again—and look, God has even let me see your children.”
Joseph took the boys from between his knees and bowed down with his face to the ground. Then he took both sons—Ephraim with his right hand facing Israel’s left, and Manasseh with his left hand facing Israel’s right—and brought them close. Israel stretched out his right hand and placed it on Ephraim’s head, even though he was the younger. He put his left hand on Manasseh’s head, crossing his hands on purpose, because Manasseh was the firstborn.
He blessed Joseph and said, “The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked—the God who has taken care of me all my life until this day—The Angel who has saved me from all harm, may he bless these boys. Let my name be placed on them, and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac. Let them grow into a great multitude throughout the earth.”
When Joseph saw that his father had placed his right hand on Ephraim’s head, he was upset. He took his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s, and said, “Not like this, Father—this one is the firstborn. Put your right hand on his head.”
But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He will also become a people, and he will also be great. But his younger brother will be greater than he is, and his descendants will become many nations.”
He blessed them that day, saying, “Israel will bless through you, saying, ‘May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.’” So he placed Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.
Then Israel said to Joseph, “Look, I’m going to die. But God will be with you and bring you back to the land of your fathers. And I’m giving you 1 portion more than your brothers—the one I took from the Amorites with my sword and my bow.”
Jacob blesses the rest of his grandsons
Jasher 56:6
Jacob said, “Bring all your children to me.”
All the sons of Jacob’s sons came and sat before him, and Jacob blessed them. He said, “May the Lord God of your fathers bless you 1,000 times over and give you the blessing of your father Abraham.”
After he had blessed them, all the sons of Jacob’s sons left that day.
Jacob calls his sons to him
Genesis 49:1-2, Jasher 56:7
The next day, Jacob called his sons together and said, “Gather around so I can tell you what will happen to you in the days to come. Come together and listen, sons of Jacob; pay attention to your father Israel.”
That day, Jacob blessed each of his sons before his death, giving each one a blessing appropriate to him. This is all recorded in the book of the law of the Lord concerning Israel.
Jacob prophesies over Reuben

“Reuben, you are my firstborn, my strength, and the beginning of my power—excelling in honor and in might. But you’re as unstable as water, and you won’t succeed, because you went up to your father’s bed and defiled it. You lay on my couch.”
Jacob prophesies over Simeon and Levi
Genesis 49:5-7
“Simeon and Levi are brothers—their swords are weapons of violence. My soul, don’t join in their secret; my honor, don’t be part of their assembly. In their anger they killed a man, and in their self-will they tore down a wall. May their anger be cursed, for it was fierce, and their wrath, for it was cruel. I will scatter them in Jacob and disperse them throughout Israel.”
Jacob prophesies over Judah
Genesis 49:8-12, Jasher 56:8-9
“Judah, your brothers will praise you. Your hand will be on the neck of your enemies, and your father’s sons will bow down to you. Teach your sons the bow and all the weapons of war so they can fight the battles of their brother who will rule over his enemies. Judah is a young lion—my son, you have returned from the prey. He crouched and lay down like a lion, like a lioness—who dares to rouse him? The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until Shiloh comes, and to him the people will gather. He ties his foal to the vine and his donkey’s colt to the choice vine. He washes his garments in wine and his robes in the blood of grapes. His eyes are darker from wine and his teeth whiter than milk.”

The archers attacked him fiercely, they shot at him and hated him, but his bow remained steady and his arms were made strong by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob—by the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel. By the God of your father who will help you, by the Almighty who will bless you with blessings from the heavens above, blessings from the deep that lies beneath, blessings of the breasts and womb. The blessings of your father surpass the blessings of my ancestors, reaching to the heights of the eternal hills. Let these rest on the head of Joseph, on the crown of the one set apart from his brothers.”
Jacob prophesies over Benjamin
Genesis 49:27
“Benjamin is a ravenous wolf. In the morning he devours the prey; in the evening he divides the spoil.”
Jacob finishes blessing his sons
Genesis 49:28, Jubilees 45:14
Israel blessed his 12 sons before he died—the 12 tribes of Israel—and told them all that would happen to them in the land of Egypt. He also told them what would take place in the last days. He blessed them and gave Joseph 2 portions in the land.
Falling Action
Jacob reminds them to bury him in Machpelah
Genesis 49:29-32, Jasher 56:10
Then he gave them instructions and said, “I’m about to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite, the cave in the field of Machpelah, which is near Mamre in the land of Canaan. Abraham bought it, along with the field, from Ephron the Hittite as a burial site. That’s where they buried Abraham and his wife Sarah, Isaac and his wife Rebekah, and I buried Leah there. The purchase of the field and the cave in it was from the sons of Heth.”
Jacob gives his sons burial instructions
Jasher 56:11-14
“But listen closely: I ask that none of your sons carry me—only you yourselves. This is how you will carry my body to Canaan for burial: Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun will carry me from the east side; Reuben, Simeon, and Gad from the south; Ephraim, Manasseh, and Benjamin from the west; Dan, Asher, and Naphtali from the north. Let Levi not carry me, for he and his sons will carry the ark of the covenant of the Lord among the Israelites in the camp. Let Joseph not carry me either, for he is like a king—let him keep his glory. Ephraim and Manasseh will take their places. Do exactly as I command, and when you do, the Lord will remember you favorably and your children after you forever.”
Jacob gives final commands to his sons
Jasher 56:15-19
“And to you, my sons, honor one another and your relatives. Teach your children and your grandchildren to serve the Lord God of your ancestors all your days. If you do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord your God, walking in all his ways, then you and your children and their children will live long in the land.
And you, Joseph my son, I ask you to forgive your brothers’ wrongs and all the harm they did to you—for God used it for your good and for the good of your children. And don’t abandon your brothers to the Egyptians or hurt them in any way, because I’m placing them in God’s hands and in yours to protect them from the Egyptians.”
And Jacob’s sons replied, “Our father, we will do everything you’ve commanded us. May God be with us.”
And Jacob said to them, “Then may God be with you as you keep all his ways. Don’t turn aside to the right or to the left from doing what is good and right in his sight.”
Jacob prophesies about the coming troubles
Jasher 56:20-21
“I know that in the last days, many difficult troubles will come upon you in that land—on your children and grandchildren. But if you serve the Lord, he will rescue you from every trouble. And when you serve God and teach your children and grandchildren to know the Lord, then the Lord will raise up a servant from among your own descendants. Through him, the Lord will deliver you from every hardship, bring you out of Egypt, and return you to the land of your fathers so you can possess it in peace.”
