(2-minute read)

In a land fraught with tension and mystery, Joseph’s grand scheme unfolds as he tests his estranged brothers’ loyalty, concealing his prized silver cup in Benjamin’s sack. The brothers, thinking themselves free, are soon ensnared in Joseph’s trap when the cup is discovered. Panic and rage drive them back to face him, and a tense confrontation erupts, with Judah boldly stepping forward, invoking their shared past and unleashing a fierce warning that rattles the palace walls. But as Egyptian soldiers surround them, Joseph can no longer restrain himself, and the truth trembles on the edge of revelation.

In a stunning turn, Joseph reveals his identity, embracing his brothers amid overwhelming emotion and pledging to bring their father, Jacob, to Egypt’s safety. Pharaoh, equally elated, bestows riches, garments, and protection for the journey, ensuring they return to Canaan as messengers of salvation. Laden with gifts and gratitude, the brothers set out, their reunion now bound to the divine purpose that shielded them from famine’s devastation.

As they near home, the joyful revelation reaches Jacob through Serach’s tender song, her words lifting the old patriarch’s spirit. Upon seeing his sons adorned in Egypt’s splendor and hearing the miraculous truth, Jacob is filled with awe. Amid celebrations lasting three days, their restored family and the rejoicing people of Canaan revel in a miracle of reconciliation and reunion, marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of a promised future in Egypt.

Joseph uses his silver cup to learn the thoughts of his brothers

Genesis 44:1-2

1 And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man’s money in his sack’s mouth.
2 And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack’s mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.

Jasher 53:23

23 At that time Joseph commanded his officer to fill their sacks with food, and to put each man’s money into his sack, and to put the cup in the sack of Benjamin, and to give them provision for the road, and they did so unto them.

Jubilees 42:25

25 And Joseph devised a plan whereby he might learn their thoughts as to whether thoughts of peace prevailed amongst them, and he said to the steward who was over his house: ‘Fill all their sacks with food, and return their money unto them into their vessels, and my cup, the silver cup out of which I drink, put it in the sack of the youngest, and send them away.’

Jubilees 43:1

1 And he did as Joseph had told him, and filled all their sacks for them with food and put their money in their sacks, and put the cup in Benjamin’s sack.

The brothers are sent back to Jacob

Genesis 44:3

3 As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses.

Jasher 53:24

24 And on the next day the men rose up early in the morning, and they loaded their asses with their corn, and they went forth with Benjamin, and they went to the land of Canaan with their brother Benjamin.

Jubilees 43:2a

2a And early in the morning they departed

Joseph tells his steward to pursue them and accuse them of theft

Genesis 44:4-5

4 And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?
5 Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.

Jasher 53:25

25 They had not gone far from Egypt when Joseph commanded him that was set over his house, saying, Rise, pursue these men before they get too far from Egypt, and say unto them, Why have you stolen my master’s cup?

Jubilees 43:2b

2b and it came to pass that, when they had gone from thence, Joseph said unto the steward of his house: ‘Pursue them, run and seize them, saying, “For good ye have requited me with evil; you have stolen from me the silver cup out of which my lord drinks.” And bring back to me their youngest brother, and fetch (him) quickly before I go forth to my seat of judgment.’

The brothers try to defend themselves

Genesis 44:6-9

6 And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words.
7 And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing:
8 Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks’ mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord’s house silver or gold?
9 With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord’s bondmen.

Jasher 53:26

26 And Joseph’s officer rose up and he reached them, and he spoke unto them all the words of Joseph; and when they heard this thing they became exceedingly wroth, and they said, He with whom thy master’s cup shall be found shall die, and we will also become slaves.

Jubilees 43:3-5

3 And he ran after them and said unto them according to these words.
4 And they said unto him: ‘God forbid that thy servants should do this thing, and steal from the house of thy lord any utensil, and the money also which we found in our sacks the first time, we thy servants brought back from the land of Canaan.
5 How then should we steal any utensil? Behold here are we and our sacks search, and wherever thou findest the cup in the sack of any man amongst us, let him be slain, and we and our asses will serve thy lord.’

Genesis 44:10

10 And he said, Now also let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and ye shall be blameless.

Jubilees 43:6

6 And he said unto them: ‘Not so, the man with whom I find, him only shall I take as a servant, and ye shall return in peace unto your house.’

The steward finds the silver cup in Benjamin’s sack and they return to Joseph's house

Genesis 44:11-14

11 Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.
12 And he searched, and began at the eldest, and left at the youngest: and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.
13 Then they rent their clothes, and laded every man his ass, and returned to the city.
14 And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph’s house; for he was yet there: and they fell before him on the ground.

Jasher 53:27

27 And they hastened and each man brought down his sack from his ass, and they looked in their bags and the cup was found in Benjamin’s bag, and they all tore their garments and they returned to the city, and they smote Benjamin in the road, continually smiting him until he came into the city, and they stood before Joseph.

Jubilees 43:7-8

7 And as he was searching in their vessels, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest, it was found in Benjamin’s sack.
8 And they rent their garments, and laded their asses, and returned to the city and came to the house of Joseph, and they all bowed themselves on their faces to the ground before him.

Jasher 53:28-29

28 And Judah’s anger was kindled, and he said, This man has only brought me back to destroy Egypt this day.
29 And the men came to Joseph’s house, and they found Joseph sitting upon his throne, and all the mighty men standing at his right and left.

Joseph interrogates them

Genesis 44:15

15 And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine?

Jasher 53:30

30 And Joseph said unto them, What is this act that you have done, that you took away my silver cup and went away? but I know that you took my cup in order to know thereby in what part of the land your brother was.

Jubilees 43:9a

9a And Joseph said unto them: ‘Ye have done evil.’

Judah speaks on behalf of his brothers

Genesis 44:16

Jasher 53:31

31 And Judah said, What shall we say to our lord, what shall we speak and how shall we justify ourselves, God has this day found the iniquity of all thy servants, therefore has he done this thing to us this day.

Jubilees 43:9b

9b And they said: ‘What shall we say and how shall we defend ourselves? Our lord hath discovered the transgression of his servants; behold we are the servants of our lord, and our asses also.

Joseph takes Benjamin and tells the other brothers to leave

Genesis 44:17

17 And he said, God forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.

Jasher 53:32

32 And Joseph rose up and caught hold of Benjamin and took him from his brethren with violence, and he came to the house and locked the door at them, and Joseph commanded him that was set over his house that he should say unto them, Thus saith the king, Go in peace to your father, behold I have taken the man in whose hand my cup was found.

Jubilees 43:10

10 ‘And Joseph said unto them: ‘I too fear the Lord; as for you, go ye to your homes and let your brother be my servant, for ye have done evil. Know ye not that a man delights in his cup as I with this cup? And yet ye have stolen it from me.’

Judah pleads with Joseph

Jasher 54:1

1 And when Judah saw the dealings of Joseph with them, Judah approached him and broke open the door, and came with his brethren before Joseph.

Genesis 44:18

18 Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.

Jasher 54:2

2 And Judah said unto Joseph, Let it not seem grievous in the sight of my lord, may thy servant I pray thee speak a word before thee? and Joseph said unto him, Speak.

Jubilees 43:11a

Jasher 54:3a

3a And Judah spoke before Joseph, and his brethren were there standing before them; and Judah said unto Joseph, Surely when we first came to our lord to buy food,

Genesis 44:19

19 My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother?

Genesis 44:20

20 And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.

Jubilees 43:11b

11b two brothers did thy servant’s mother bear to our father: one went away and was lost, and hath not been found, and he alone is left of his mother, and thy servant our father loves him, and his life also is bound up with the life of this (lad).

Genesis 44:21-29

21 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.
22 And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.
23 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.
24 And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.
25 And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food.
26 And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man’s face, except our youngest brother be with us.
27 And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons:
28 And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since:
29 And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.

Genesis 44:30-31

30 Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad’s life;
31 It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave.

Jubilees 43:12

12 And it will come to pass, when we go to thy servant our father, and the lad is not with us, that he will die, and we shall bring down our father with sorrow unto death.

Jasher 54:3b

3b thou didst consider us as spies of the land, and we brought Benjamin before thee, and thou still makest sport of us this day.

Genesis 44:32-33

32 For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever.
33 Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.

Jasher 54:4

4 Now therefore let the king hear my words, and send I pray thee our brother that he may go along with us to our father, lest thy soul perish this day with all the souls of the inhabitants of Egypt.

Jubilees 43:13

13 Now rather let me, thy servant, abide instead of the boy as a bondsman unto my lord, and let the lad go with his brethren, for I became surety for him at the hand of thy servant our father, and if I do not bring him back, thy servant will hear the blame to our father for ever.’

Genesis 44:34

34 For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.

Jasher 54:5-8

5 Dost thou not know what two of my brethren, Simeon and Levi, did unto the city of Shechem, and unto seven cities of the Amorites, on account of our sister Dinah, and also what they would do for the sake of their brother Benjamin?
6 And I with my strength, who am greater and mightier than both of them, come this day upon thee and thy land if thou art unwilling to send our brother.
7 Hast thou not heard what our God who made choice of us did unto Pharaoh on account of Sarah our mother, whom he took away from our father, that he smote him and his household with heavy plagues, that even unto this day the Egyptians relate this wonder to each other? so will our God do unto thee on account of Benjamin whom thou hast this day taken from his father, and on account of the evils which thou this day heapest over us in thy land; for our God will remember his covenant with our father Abraham and bring evil upon thee, because thou hast grieved the soul of our father this day.
8 Now therefore hear my words that I have this day spoken unto thee, and send our brother that he may go away lest thou and the people of thy land die by the sword, for you cannot all prevail over me.

Joseph and Judah exchange threats to each other

Jasher 54:9-27

9 And Joseph answered Judah, saying, Why hast thou opened wide thy mouth and why dost thou boast over us, saying, Strength is with thee? as Pharaoh liveth, if I command all my valiant men to fight with you, surely thou and these thy brethren would sink in the mire.
10 And Judah said unto Joseph, Surely it becometh thee and thy people to fear me; as the Lord liveth if I once draw my sword I shall not sheathe it again until I shall this day have slain all Egypt, and I will commence with thee and finish with Pharaoh thy master.
11 And Joseph answered and said unto him, Surely strength belongeth not alone to thee; I am stronger and mightier than thou, surely if thou drawest thy sword I will put it to thy neck and the necks of all thy brethren.
12 And Judah said unto him, Surely if I this day open my mouth against thee I would swallow thee up that thou be destroyed from off the earth and perish this day from thy kingdom. And Joseph said, Surely if thou openest thy mouth I have power and might to close thy mouth with a stone until thou shalt not be able to utter a word; see how many stones are before us, truly I can take a stone, and force it into thy mouth and break thy jaws.
13 And Judah said, God is witness between us, that we have not hitherto desired to battle with thee, only give us our brother and we will go from thee; and Joseph answered and said, As Pharaoh liveth, if all the kings of Canaan came together with you, you should not take him from my hand.
14 Now therefore go your way to your father, and your brother shall be unto me for a slave, for he has robbed the king’s house. And Judah said, What is it to thee or to the character of the king, surely the king sendeth forth from his house, throughout the land, silver and gold either in gifts or expenses, and thou still talkest about thy cup which thou didst place in our brother’s bag and sayest that he has stolen it from thee?
15 God forbid that our brother Benjamin or any of the seed of Abraham should do this thing to steal from thee, or from any one else, whether king, prince, or any man.
16 Now therefore cease this accusation lest the whole earth hear thy words, saying, For a little silver the king of Egypt wrangled with the men, and he accused them and took their brother for a slave.
17 And Joseph answered and said, Take unto you this cup and go from me and leave your brother for a slave, for it is the judgment of a thief to be a slave.
18 And Judah said, Why art thou not ashamed of thy words, to leave our brother and to take thy cup? Surely if thou givest us thy cup, or a thousand times as much, we will not leave our brother for the silver which is found in the hand of any man, that we will not die over him.
19 And Joseph answered, And why did you forsake your brother and sell him for twenty pieces of silver unto this day, and why then will you not do the same to this your brother?
20 And Judah said, the Lord is witness between me and thee that we desire not thy battles; now therefore give us our brother and we will go from thee without quarreling.
21 And Joseph answered and said, If all the kings of the land should assemble they will not be able to take your brother from my hand; and Judah said, What shall we say unto our father, when he seeth that our brother cometh not with us, and will grieve over him?
22 And Joseph answered and said, This is the thing which you shall tell unto your father, saying, The rope has gone after the bucket.
23 And Judah said, Surely thou art a king, and why speakest thou these things, giving a false judgment? woe unto the king who is like unto thee.
24 And Joseph answered and said, There is no false judgment in the word that I spoke on account of your brother Joseph, for all of you sold him to the Midianites for twenty pieces of silver, and you all denied it to your father and said unto him, An evil beast has devoured him, Joseph has been torn to pieces.
25 And Judah said, Behold the fire of Shem burneth in my heart, now I will burn all your land with fire; and Joseph answered and said, Surely thy sister-in-law Tamar, who killed your sons, extinguished the fire of Shechem.
26 And Judah said, If I pluck out a single hair from my flesh, I will fill all Egypt with its blood.
27 And Joseph answered and said, Such is your custom to do as you did to your brother whom you sold, and you dipped his coat in blood and brought it to your father in order that he might say an evil beast devoured him and here is his blood.

Judah demonstrates his strength and then Manasseh mimics him

Jasher 54:28-30

28 And when Judah heard this thing he was exceedingly wroth and his anger burned within him, and there was before him in that place a stone, the weight of which was about four hundred shekels, and Judah’s anger was kindled and he took the stone in one hand and cast it to the heavens and caught it with his left hand.
29 And he placed it afterward under his legs, and he sat upon it with all his strength and the stone was turned into dust from the force of Judah.
30 And Joseph saw the act of Judah and he was very much afraid, but he commanded Manassah his son and he also did with another stone like unto the act of Judah, and Judah said unto his brethren, Let not any of you say, this man is an Egyptian, but by his doing this thing he is of our father’s family.

Judah asks for Benjamin and Joseph tells them to leave

Jasher 54:31-32

31 And Joseph said, Not to you only is strength given, for we are also powerful men, and why will you boast over us all? and Judah said unto Joseph, Send I pray thee our brother and ruin not thy country this day.
32 And Joseph answered and said unto them, Go and tell your father, an evil beast hath devoured him as you said concerning your brother Joseph.

Judah sends out Naphtali and Joseph sends out Manasseh

Jasher 54:33-38

33 And Judah spoke to his brother Naphtali, and he said unto him, Make haste, go now and number all the streets of Egypt and come and tell me; and Simeon said unto him, Let not this thing be a trouble to thee; now I will go to the mount and take up one large stone from the mount and level it at every one in Egypt, and kill all that are in it.
34 And Joseph heard all these words that his brethren spoke before him, and they did not know that Joseph understood them, for they imagined that he knew not to speak Hebrew.
35 And Joseph was greatly afraid at the words of his brethren lest they should destroy Egypt, and he commanded his son Manasseh, saying, Go now make haste and gather unto me all the inhabitants of Egypt, and all the valiant men together, and let them come to me now upon horseback and on foot and with all sorts of musical instruments, and Manasseh went and did so.
36 And Naphtali went as Judah had commanded him, for Naphtali was lightfooted as one of the swift stags, and he would go upon the ears of corn and they would not break under him.
37 And he went and numbered all the streets of Egypt, and found them to be twelve, and he came hastily and told Judah, and Judah said unto his brethren, Hasten you and put on every man his sword upon his loins and we will come over Egypt, and smite them all, and let not a remnant remain.
38 And Judah said, Behold, I will destroy three of the streets with my strength, and you shall each destroy one street; and when Judah was speaking this thing, behold the inhabitants of Egypt and all the mighty men came toward them with all sorts of musical instruments and with loud shouting.

The brothers are surrounded and terrified

Jasher 54:39-41

39 And their number was five hundred cavalry and ten thousand infantry, and four hundred men who could fight without sword or spear, only with their hands and strength.
40 And all the mighty men came with great storming and shouting, and they all surrounded the sons of Jacob and terrified them, and the ground quaked at the sound of their shouting.
41 And when the sons of Jacob saw these troops they were greatly afraid of their lives, and Joseph did so in order to terrify the sons of Jacob to become tranquilized.

Judah attacks and the people retreat

Jasher 54:42-45

42 And Judah, seeing some of his brethren terrified, said unto them, Why are you afraid whilst the grace of God is with us? and when Judah saw all the people of Egypt surrounding them at the command of Joseph to terrify them, only Joseph commanded them, saying, Do not touch any of them.
43 Then Judah hastened and drew his sword, and uttered a loud and bitter scream, and he smote with his sword, and he sprang upon the ground and he still continued to shout against all the people.
44 And when he did this thing the Lord caused the terror of Judah and his brethren to fall upon the valiant men and all the people that surrounded them.
45 And they all fled at the sound of the shouting, and they were terrified and fell one upon the other, and many of them died as they fell, and they all fled from before Judah and his brethren and from before Joseph.

Judah returns to Joseph and shrieks

Jasher 54:46-47

46 And whilst they were fleeing, Judah and his brethren pursued them unto the house of Pharaoh, and they all escaped, and Judah again sat before Joseph and roared at him like a lion, and gave a great and tremendous shriek at him.
47 And the shriek was heard at a distance, and all the inhabitants of Succoth heard it, and all Egypt quaked at the sound of the shriek, and also the walls of Egypt and of the land of Goshen fell in from the shaking of the earth, and Pharaoh also fell from his throne upon the ground, and also all the pregnant women of Egypt and Goshen miscarried when they heard the noise of the shaking, for they were terribly afraid.

Pharaoh inquiries about what is happening and tells Joseph to let Benjamin go

Jasher 54:48-52

48 And Pharaoh sent word, saying, What is this thing that has this day happened in the land of Egypt? and they came and told him all the things from beginning to end, and Pharaoh was alarmed and he wondered and was greatly afraid.
49 And his fright increased when he heard all these things, and he sent unto Joseph, saying, Thou hast brought unto me the Hebrews to destroy all Egypt; what wilt thou do with that thievish slave? send him away and let him go with his brethren, and let us not perish through their evil, even we, you and all Egypt.
50 And if thou desirest not to do this thing, cast off from thee all my valuable things, and go with them to their land, if thou delightest in it, for they will this day destroy my whole country and slay all my people; even all the women of Egypt have miscarried through their screams; see what they have done merely by their shouting and speaking, moreover if they fight with the sword, they will destroy the land; now therefore choose that which thou desirest, whether me or the Hebrews, whether Egypt or the land of the Hebrews.
51 And they came and told Joseph all the words of Pharaoh that he had said concerning him, and Joseph was greatly afraid at the words of Pharaoh and Judah and his brethren were still standing before Joseph indignant and enraged, and all the sons of Jacob roared at Joseph, like the roaring of the sea and its waves.
52 And Joseph was greatly afraid of his brethren and on account of Pharaoh, and Joseph sought a pretext to make himself known unto his brethren, lest they should destroy all Egypt.

Manasseh calms Judah down

Jasher 54:53-54

53 And Joseph commanded his son Manasseh, and Manasseh went and approached Judah, and placed his hand upon his shoulder, and the anger of Judah was stilled.
54 And Judah said unto his brethren, Let no one of you say that this is the act of an Egyptian youth for this is the work of my father’s house.

Joseph questions Judah

Jasher 54:55-68

55 And Joseph seeing and knowing that Judah’s anger was stilled, he approached to speak unto Judah in the language of mildness.
56 And Joseph said unto Judah, Surely you speak truth and have this day verified your assertions concerning your strength, and may your God who delighteth in you, increase your welfare; but tell me truly why from amongst all thy brethren dost thou wrangle with me on account of the lad, as none of them have spoken one word to me concerning him.
57 And Judah answered Joseph, saying, Surely thou must know that I was security for the lad to his father, saying, If I brought him not unto him I should bear his blame forever.
58 Therefore have I approached thee from amongst all my brethren, for I saw that thou wast unwilling to suffer him to go from thee; now therefore may I find grace in thy sight that thou shalt send him to go with us, and behold I will remain as a substitute for him, to serve thee in whatever thou desirest, for wheresoever thou shalt send me I will go to serve thee with great energy.
59 Send me now to a mighty king who has rebelled against thee, and thou shalt know what I will do unto him and unto his land; although he may have cavalry and infantry or an exceeding mighty people, I will slay them all and bring the king’s head before thee.
60 Dost thou not know or hast thou not heard that our father Abraham with his servant Eliezer smote all the kings of Elam with their hosts in one night, they left not one remaining? and ever since that day our father’s strength was given unto us for an inheritance, for us and our seed forever.
61 And Joseph answered and said, You speak truth, and falsehood is not in your mouth, for it was also told unto us that the Hebrews have power and that the Lord their God delighteth much in them, and who then can stand before them?
62 However, on this condition will I send your brother, if you will bring before me his brother the son of his mother, of whom you said that he had gone from you down to Egypt; and it shall come to pass when you bring unto me his brother I will take him in his stead, because not one of you was security for him to your father, and when he shall come unto me, I will then send with you his brother for whom you have been security.
63 And Judah’s anger was kindled against Joseph when he spoke this thing, and his eyes dropped blood with anger, and he said unto his brethren, How doth this man this day seek his own destruction and that of all Egypt!
64 And Simeon answered Joseph, saying, Did we not tell thee at first that we knew not the particular spot to which he went, and whether he be dead or alive, and wherefore speaketh my lord like unto these things?
65 And Joseph observing the countenance of Judah discerned that his anger began to kindle when he spoke unto him, saying, Bring unto me your other brother instead of this brother.
66 And Joseph said unto his brethren, Surely you said that your brother was either dead or lost, now if I should call him this day and he should come before you, would you give him unto me instead of his brother?
67 And Joseph began to speak and call out, Joseph, Joseph, come this day before me, and appear to thy brethren and sit before them.
68 And when Joseph spoke this thing before them, they looked each a different way to see from whence Joseph would come before them.

21 And the children of Israel did so: and Joseph gave them wagons, according to the commandment of Pharaoh, and gave them provision for the way.

89 And he commanded them, saying, When you come unto the land of Canaan, do not come suddenly before my father in this affair, but act in your wisdom.

91 And they came unto the borders of the land, and they said to each other, What shall we do in this matter before our father, for if we come suddenly to him and tell him the matter, he will be greatly alarmed at our words and will not believe us.
92 And they went along until they came nigh unto their houses, and they found Serach, the daughter of Asher, going forth to meet them, and the damsel was very good and subtle, and knew how to play upon the harp.
93 And they called unto her and she came before them, and she kissed them, and they took her and gave unto her a harp, saying, Go now before our father, and sit before him, and strike upon the harp, and speak these words.
94 And they commanded her to go to their house, and she took the harp and hastened before them, and she came and sat near Jacob.
95 And she played well and sang, and uttered in the sweetness of her words, Joseph my uncle is living, and he ruleth throughout the land of Egypt, and is not dead.
96 And she continued to repeat and utter these words, and Jacob heard her words and they were agreeable to him.
97 He listened whilst she repeated them twice and thrice, and joy entered the heart of Jacob at the sweetness of her words, and the spirit of God was upon him, and he knew all her words to be true.
98 And Jacob blessed Serach when she spoke these words before him, and he said unto her, My daughter, may death never prevail over thee, for thou hast revived my spirit; only speak yet before me as thou hast spoken, for thou hast gladdened me with all thy words.
99 And she continued to sing these words, and Jacob listened and it pleased him, and he rejoiced, and the spirit of God was upon him.
100 Whilst he was yet speaking with her, behold his sons came to him with horses and chariots and royal garments and servants running before them.
101 And Jacob rose up to meet them, and saw his sons dressed in royal garments and he saw all the treasures that Joseph had sent to them.

103 And Jacob heard all the words of his sons, and his heart palpitated at their words, for he could not believe them until he saw all that Joseph had given them and what he had sent him, and all the signs which Joseph had spoken unto them.
104 And they opened out before him, and showed him all that Joseph had sent, they gave unto each what Joseph had sent him, and he knew that they had spoken the truth, and he rejoiced exceedingly an account of his son.

109 And all the inhabitants of Canaan heard of this thing, and they came and rejoiced much with Jacob that he was still living.
110 And Jacob made a feast for them for three days, and all the kings of Canaan and nobles of the land ate and drank and rejoiced in the house of Jacob.

Exposition

J: 46 | Y: 2243 | Joseph uses his silver cup to learn the thoughts of his brothers
Genesis 44:1-2, Jasher 53:23, Jubilees 42:25, 43:1
Joseph came up with a plan to find out what his brothers were really thinking—whether they had peaceful intentions. He told the steward of his house, “Fill all their sacks with food and put their money back in their containers. Then take my cup—the silver one I drink from—and place it in the sack of the youngest, Benjamin. Then send them on their way.”

The steward did exactly as Joseph instructed. He filled all their sacks with food, returned their money into their sacks, and put the silver cup into Benjamin’s sack.

The brothers are sent back to Jacob
Genesis 44:3, Jasher 53:24, Jubilees 43:2a
The next morning, the men got up early, loaded their donkeys with grain, and left with Benjamin, heading back to the land of Canaan.

Rising Action

Joseph tells his steward to pursue after them and accuse them of theft
Genesis 44:4-5, Jasher 53:25, Jubilees 43:2b
After they had left the city and weren’t far off, Joseph told his steward, “Go after them, and when you catch up to them, say, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil? You’ve stolen the silver cup my master drinks from—the one he uses to divine! What you’ve done is wicked.’”

The brothers try to defend themselves
Genesis 44:6-10, Jasher 53:26, Jubilees 43:3-6
The steward ran after them and said exactly what Joseph had instructed. The brothers responded, “God forbid that your servants would do such a thing—steal anything from your master’s house! We even brought back the money we found in our sacks the first time from Canaan. Why would we steal any item now? Go ahead and search us and our sacks. If you find the cup in any man’s sack, let him be killed, and the rest of us, along with our donkeys, will serve your master.”

But the steward replied, “No, only the man who has the cup will become my servant. The rest of you may return home in peace.”

The steward finds the silver cup in Benjamin’s sack and return to Joseph’s house
Genesis 44:11-14, Jasher 53:27-29, Jubilees 43:7-8
Then they quickly unloaded their sacks from their donkeys, and the steward searched through them. The cup was found in Benjamin’s sack. The brothers tore their clothes in anguish, and they returned to the city. Along the way, they struck Benjamin repeatedly until they arrived, then stood before Joseph and bowed with their faces to the ground.

Judah was furious and said, “This man brought me back just to destroy Egypt today.”

When they reached Joseph’s house, they found him sitting on his throne, surrounded by all the mighty men standing on his right and left.

Climax

Joseph interrogates them
Genesis 44:15, Jasher 53:30, Jubilees 43:9a
Joseph said, “What is this you’ve done—taking my silver cup and then leaving? Don’t you know I can divine? I know you took the cup to find out where your brother was in the land.”

Judah speaks on behalf of his brothers
Genesis 44:16, Jasher 53:31, Jubilees 43:9b
Judah replied, “What can we say to my lord? What words can we offer, or how can we prove our innocence? God has uncovered the guilt of your servants. We are now your servants, both we and our donkeys, and the one with whom the cup was found.”

Joseph takes Benjamin and tells the other brothers to leave
Genesis 44:17, Jasher 53:32, Jubilees 43:10
Joseph got up, grabbed Benjamin, and forcefully separated him from the others. He took him into the house and shut the door behind them. Then he ordered his steward to tell the brothers, “This is what the king says: ‘I too fear the Lord. Go in peace to your father. I’ve taken the one in whose hand the cup was found as my servant, because you’ve done evil. Don’t you know how dear a cup is to a man? Just as I cherish this cup, you’ve stolen it from me.’”

Judah pleads with Joseph
Genesis 44:18-34, Jasher 54:1-8, Jubilees 43:11-13
When Judah saw how Joseph was treating them, he went to the door, broke it open, and entered with his brothers to stand before Joseph.

Judah said, “My lord, please let your servant say a word in your ear. Don’t be angry with me, for you are like Pharaoh himself.”

Joseph said, “Speak.”

Judah continued, “My father had 2 sons by one mother. One disappeared and has never been found. The one who remains is deeply loved by our father—his life is tied to the life of this boy. When we first came to you to buy food, you asked us, ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’ We answered, ‘We have a father, an old man, and a young son born in his old age. His brother is dead. He’s the only one left of his mother, and his father loves him.’ Then you told us, ‘Bring him here so I can see him.’ We said, ‘The boy can’t leave his father. If he does, his father will die.’ But you said, ‘If your youngest brother doesn’t come with you, you won’t see my face again.’

“So when we returned to our father, we told him what you said. Later, he told us to go back and buy a little more food, and we said, ‘We can’t go unless our youngest brother comes with us, or we won’t be allowed to see the man’s face.’

“Then our father said, ‘You know my wife gave me 2 sons. One went out from me and I said, “Surely he’s been torn to pieces,” and I haven’t seen him since. If you take this one too, and something bad happens to him, you’ll send my gray hairs down to the grave in sorrow.’

“So if I return to my father without the boy—whose life is so bound to his—he will die when he sees the boy is not with us. Then we, your servants, will bring our father’s gray hairs down to the grave in sorrow.

“You accused us of being spies, and we brought Benjamin to you to prove otherwise, and still you toy with us. Please, let me stay instead of the boy as your servant, and let him return with his brothers. I guaranteed his safety to our father, and if I don’t bring him back, I’ll carry the blame forever.

“How can I return to my father without the boy? I couldn’t bear to see the misery that would fall on my father.

“Don’t you know what 2 of my brothers—Simeon and Levi—did to the city of Shechem and to 7 Amorite cities for the sake of our sister Dinah? What do you think they would do now for their brother Benjamin? I am stronger than both of them, and today I would bring war upon you and your land if you don’t return our brother.

“Haven’t you heard what our God did to Pharaoh because of Sarah, our mother, whom he took from our father? God struck Pharaoh and his household with severe plagues, and Egyptians still talk about it to this day. That’s what God will do to you because of Benjamin, whom you’ve taken from his father, and because of all the trouble you’re causing us today.

“God will remember his covenant with our father Abraham and bring judgment on you, because you’ve broken our father’s heart.

“So please, listen to what I’ve said and send our brother with us, or you and your people will die by the sword. You won’t be able to stand against me.”

Joseph and Judah exchange threats to each other
Jasher 54:9-27
Joseph replied to Judah, “Why are you running your mouth and bragging like strength is on your side? As surely as Pharaoh lives, if I order all my strongest men to fight you, you and your brothers would be buried in the mud.”

Judah shot back, “You and your people should be the ones afraid of me. As the Lord lives, if I draw my sword, I won’t put it away again until I’ve wiped out all of Egypt today—starting with you and ending with your master Pharaoh.”

Joseph responded, “You don’t have a monopoly on strength. I’m stronger and more powerful than you. If you draw your sword, I’ll strike you and all your brothers down.”

Judah said, “If I open my mouth against you, I could swallow you whole. You’d be wiped off the face of the earth and your kingdom would fall with you.”

Joseph said, “If you open your mouth, I’ve got the power to shut it with a stone so you won’t be able to speak another word. Look at all these stones around us—I could take one and jam it into your mouth and break your jaw.”

Judah said, “God is witness that we didn’t come here looking for a fight. Just give us our brother and we’ll leave.”

Joseph replied, “As Pharaoh lives, even if all the kings of Canaan joined forces with you, you still wouldn’t get him from me. Go back to your father—your brother will stay with me as a slave because he stole from the king’s house.”

Judah said, “Why does that matter to you or to the king? The king sends silver and gold out all over the land as gifts or expenses, and yet you still complain about a cup that you planted in our brother’s bag and claim he stole? God forbid Benjamin or any of Abraham’s descendants would ever do something like that—stealing from you or anyone else, whether a king, a prince, or any man. So drop this accusation before the whole world hears that for a little silver, the king of Egypt argued with men and took one of them as a slave.”

Joseph said, “Take the cup and leave. Your brother will stay here as a slave—that’s the sentence for a thief.”

Judah said, “Aren’t you ashamed of what you’re saying—keeping our brother and giving us your cup? Even if you gave us 1,000 times as much, we’d never abandon our brother for silver found in anyone’s possession. We’d rather die first.”

Joseph asked, “Then why did you abandon your other brother and sell him for 20 pieces of silver? Why not do the same to this one?”

Judah replied, “The Lord is witness that we don’t want to fight with you. Just give us our brother and we’ll go peacefully.”

Joseph said, “Even if every king in the land came together, they still wouldn’t be able to take your brother from me.”

Judah asked, “What are we supposed to tell our father when we return without our brother and he’s heartbroken?”

Joseph answered, “Tell your father this: ‘The rope has followed the bucket.’”

Judah said, “You call yourself a king—why speak such nonsense and give such a corrupt judgment? Cursed is the king who’s like you.”

Joseph replied, “There’s nothing corrupt about what I said about your brother Joseph. You all sold him to the Midianites for 20 pieces of silver, then lied to your father and said, ‘A wild beast killed him, Joseph’s been torn to pieces.’”

Judah said, “The fire of Shem burns in my heart. I’ll burn down your entire country!”

Joseph answered, “Your sister-in-law Tamar, who killed your sons, already put out the fire of Shechem.”

Judah said, “If I pull even one hair from my body, I’ll fill all of Egypt with blood.”

Joseph replied, “That’s exactly your way—just like what you did to your brother, whose coat you dipped in blood and gave to your father so he’d think a wild animal killed him.”

Judah demonstrates his strength and then Manasseh mimics him
Jasher 54:28-30
When Judah heard this, he was furious—his anger burned inside him. In front of him was a stone weighing about 400 shekels. In his rage, Judah picked it up with one hand, threw it into the air, caught it with his other hand, then placed it under his legs and sat on it with all his strength until it crumbled into dust from the pressure. Joseph saw this and was terrified. He told his son Manasseh to do the same, and Manasseh picked up another stone and mimicked Judah’s actions. Then Judah said to his brothers, “Don’t let anyone say this man is an Egyptian—by what he just did, he must be from our father’s family.”

Judah asks for Benjamin and Joseph tells them to leave
Jasher 54:31-32
Joseph said, “You’re not the only ones with strength—we’re powerful too. So why act like you’re above us?”

Judah said, “I beg you, send our brother back with us. Don’t destroy your land today.”

Joseph replied, “Go and tell your father that a wild animal devoured him—just like you said about your brother Joseph.”

Judah sends out Naphtali and Joseph sends out Manasseh
Jasher 54:33-38
Judah said to Naphtali, “Hurry, go now and count all the streets of Egypt, then come back and report.”

Simeon added, “Don’t worry about it—I’ll go up to the mountain, grab a huge stone, and level it at every person in Egypt, killing everyone there.”

Joseph overheard everything his brothers were saying, though they didn’t realize he understood them—they assumed he couldn’t speak Hebrew. He was deeply afraid that they might actually destroy Egypt. So he ordered his son Manasseh, “Quick, go gather all the people of Egypt, all the strong warriors, and have them come to me—on horseback, on foot, and with all kinds of musical instruments.” Manasseh followed his orders.

Meanwhile, Naphtali obeyed Judah’s command. Naphtali was incredibly fast—he could run across the tops of wheat stalks without breaking them. He went and counted all the streets of Egypt and found there were 12. He ran back and told Judah, who then said to his brothers, “Get ready! Strap on your swords—we’re going through Egypt, and we won’t leave a single one alive.”

Judah continued, “I’ll take down 3 of the streets by myself. Each of you handle 1.”

As Judah was saying this, the people of Egypt and all their warriors came toward them with every kind of instrument and loud shouting.

The brothers are surrounded and terrified
Jasher 54:39-41
There were 500 cavalrymen, 10,000 foot soldiers, and 400 men trained to fight bare-handed without sword or spear—just using their strength. They came in a massive wave, shouting, and completely surrounded the sons of Jacob, terrifying them. The ground shook from their cries. When the sons of Jacob saw the army, they were deeply afraid for their lives. Joseph had done this on purpose to scare his brothers into calming down.

Judah attacks and the people retreat
Jasher 54:42-45
When Judah saw some of his brothers getting scared, he said, “Why are you afraid when God’s favor is with us?”

He realized that all these Egyptians were there because of Joseph’s command to scare them, but Joseph had also instructed them, “Don’t touch any of them.”

Then Judah sprang into action—he drew his sword and let out a fierce, bitter roar. He struck with his sword, jumped to the ground, and kept shouting at everyone. The Lord caused Judah’s and his brothers’ terrifying presence to fall upon the Egyptians and their warriors. Everyone panicked and ran in fear, stumbling over each other. Many were trampled and died, and the rest fled from Judah, his brothers, and even Joseph.

Judah returns to Joseph and shrieks
Jasher 54:46-47
While the Egyptians were fleeing, Judah and his brothers chased them all the way to Pharaoh’s house. After they returned, Judah sat down in front of Joseph again and roared at him like a lion, letting out a massive, thunderous scream. The shriek echoed far and wide—everyone in Succoth heard it, and all of Egypt shook. The quake brought down the walls of Egypt and Goshen, and Pharaoh fell off his throne. Every pregnant woman in Egypt and Goshen miscarried out of sheer terror from the shaking.

Pharaoh inquiries about what is happening and tells Joseph to let Benjamin go
Jasher 54:48-52
Pharaoh sent messengers asking, “What on earth just happened in Egypt today?”

They reported everything to him from beginning to end. Pharaoh was shocked, deeply disturbed, and terrified. His fear grew even more after hearing the full account. He sent word to Joseph, saying, “You’ve brought these Hebrews here just to destroy Egypt! What are you planning to do with that so-called thief? Let him go—send him away with his brothers! Don’t bring ruin on all of us—you, me, and all of Egypt. And if you refuse, then take everything valuable I’ve given you, leave with them, and go to their land if that’s what you want. If they can do this just by yelling and speaking, imagine what they’ll do with swords. They’ll wipe out the whole land! So make your choice—me or them, Egypt or the land of the Hebrews.”

When they delivered Pharaoh’s message to Joseph, he was extremely afraid. Judah and his brothers still stood before him, furious and filled with rage. All the sons of Jacob roared at Joseph like crashing waves, and Joseph was terrified—both of them and of Pharaoh. He began looking for a way to reveal himself to his brothers before they ended up destroying all of Egypt.

Manasseh calms Judah down
Jasher 54:53-54
Joseph told his son Manasseh to go over to Judah. Manasseh approached him and placed his hand on Judah’s shoulder, and Judah’s anger calmed down. Then Judah said to his brothers, “Don’t let any of you think this was done by some Egyptian youth—this comes from my father’s house.”

Joseph questions Judah
Jasher 54:55-68
When Joseph saw that Judah’s anger had settled, he stepped forward and spoke to him in a gentle tone. He said, “You’ve spoken the truth today and proven what you said about your strength. May your God, who clearly delights in you, continue to bless you. But tell me honestly—why are you the only one among your brothers who’s arguing with me about the boy? None of the others have said a word to me about him.”

Judah replied, “You must know I promised our father I’d be responsible for the boy. I told him, ‘If I don’t bring him back, I’ll carry the blame forever.’ That’s why I’ve stepped forward—because I saw you weren’t going to let him go. So please, let me find favor in your eyes and send him back with us. I’ll stay in his place and serve you however you want. Wherever you send me, I’ll go and serve with all my strength. Send me to a powerful king who’s rebelled against you, and you’ll see what I’ll do to him and his land. Even if he has cavalry, infantry, or a huge army, I’ll destroy them and bring you the king’s head. Haven’t you heard what our father Abraham did with his servant Eliezer? They attacked and defeated all the kings of Elam and their armies in one night—not one survived. Since that day, that strength has been passed down to us and our descendants forever.”

Joseph answered, “You’re right—there’s no lie in your words. We’ve also heard that the Hebrews are powerful and that the Lord their God favors them. Who could stand against such people? But I’ll release your brother under one condition: bring me his other brother—the one you said went down to Egypt. When you bring him to me, I’ll take him in this one’s place, since none of you made yourselves responsible for him to your father. Once he comes to me, I’ll send back the brother for whom you gave your word.”

Judah became furious when Joseph said this. His eyes burned with anger and even bled, and he said to his brothers, “How can this man be asking for his own destruction—and all of Egypt’s—right now?”

Then Simeon said to Joseph, “Didn’t we already tell you we didn’t know where he went, or whether he’s alive or dead? Why are you talking like this?”

Joseph noticed Judah’s expression and saw his anger rising when he mentioned, “Bring me your other brother instead of this one.”

So Joseph turned to his brothers and said, “You claimed your brother was either dead or lost. But what if I called him right now and he showed up in front of you? Would you give him to me in place of this brother?”

Then Joseph started to speak out: “Joseph, Joseph, come here today. Stand before me and appear to your brothers. Sit with them.”

When Joseph said this, the brothers looked around in every direction, trying to see where this ‘Joseph’ would come from.

Joseph asks everyone else to leave so he can reveal himself to his brothers
Genesis 45:1-6, Jasher 54:69-70, Jubilees 43:14-17
Joseph could see they were united and sincere with each other. He couldn’t hold back his emotions anymore in front of everyone standing around, so he shouted, “Everyone, leave me!”

No one stayed with him while he revealed himself to his brothers. He broke down and wept so loudly that the Egyptians and even Pharaoh’s household could hear it.

Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I’m Joseph. Is my father still alive?”

His brothers couldn’t respond—they were shocked and overwhelmed by his presence.

Joseph watched their reactions and said, “Why are you all looking around? I’m Joseph—the one you sold into Egypt. But don’t be upset or angry with yourselves for doing that, because God sent me ahead of you to save lives during this famine.”

His brothers were terrified when they heard Joseph’s words—especially Judah, who was deeply shaken.

They didn’t recognize him, and they started crying. But Joseph said, “Don’t cry over me. Just hurry and bring my father to me. You can see it’s really me talking, and Benjamin sees it too. Look—this is the 2nd year of the famine. There are still 5 more years to come with no harvest, no fruit from trees, and no plowing.”

Joseph reveals his purpose
Genesis 45:7-8, Jubilees 43:18
“Come down quickly—you and your whole household—so you don’t die from the famine. Don’t worry about your belongings, because the Lord sent me ahead of you to prepare and make sure many people would survive. So it wasn’t you who sent me here, but God. He’s made me a father to Pharaoh, ruler of his entire household, and governor over all the land of Egypt.”

Falling Action

Joseph tells them to bring Jacob so they can dwell in Goshen
Genesis 45:9-13, Jubilees 43:19-20
“Hurry and go back to my father. Tell him, ‘This is what your son Joseph says: “God has made me lord over all Egypt. Come down to me—don’t delay! You’ll live in the land of Goshen and be close to me—you, your children, your grandchildren, your flocks, your herds, and everything you own. I’ll take care of you there, because there are still 5 years of famine ahead. If you don’t come, you and your household and all you have might fall into poverty.”’

You can see for yourselves—and so can my brother Benjamin—that it’s really me speaking to you. Tell my father about all my honor and wealth in Egypt, and everything you’ve seen. Then hurry and bring my father down here.”

Joseph weeps with Benjamin and then the rest of his brothers
Genesis 45:14-15, Jasher 54:71-72
When Benjamin heard Joseph’s words, he was in the inner part of the house. He ran out to Joseph, embraced him, and fell on his neck, and they both wept. When the other brothers saw Benjamin weeping on Joseph’s neck, they too embraced Joseph and wept with him. They cried deeply together. Joseph kissed each of his brothers and wept over them. After that, they began to talk with him.

Pharaoh is pleased with the family reunion
Genesis 45:16, Jasher 54:73-74
The news spread through Joseph’s household that his brothers had arrived, and Pharaoh was very pleased. Still, he was a bit afraid of them, worried they might destroy Egypt.

Pharaoh sent his servants to congratulate Joseph on the arrival of his brothers. All the military captains and troops in Egypt came to celebrate with Joseph, and the whole land of Egypt rejoiced greatly over the reunion with his brothers.

Pharaoh invited them to stay in Egypt
Genesis 45:17-18, Jasher 54:75
Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Tell your brothers, ‘This is what you should do: load your animals and go back to the land of Canaan. Bring your father and your households and come back to me. I’ll give you the best of the land of Egypt, and you will enjoy the finest things here.’”

Pharaoh will give them provisions
Genesis 45:19-22
“You’re also commanded to do this: take wagons from Egypt for your children and your wives, and bring your father and come back. Don’t worry about your belongings, because the best of Egypt will be yours.”

The sons of Israel did just as instructed. Joseph gave them wagons as Pharaoh had ordered, and he also gave them provisions for their journey. To each of them, he gave a change of clothes. But to Benjamin, he gave 300 pieces of silver and 5 sets of clothes.

Joseph gives the brothers and sister provisions
Genesis 45:23, Jasher 54:76-85, Jubilees 43:21-22
Joseph ordered the overseer of his house to bring out gifts and garments for his brothers. The man brought out many royal robes and other gifts, and Joseph divided them among his brothers. Each of them received a set of gold and silver garments and 300 pieces of silver. Joseph had them all dressed in these garments and brought before Pharaoh. When Pharaoh saw that all of Joseph’s brothers were strong and handsome, he was very pleased.

Afterward, they left Pharaoh’s presence to head back to the land of Canaan, with Benjamin among them.

Joseph then gave them 11 chariots from Pharaoh, and even sent the chariot he himself had ridden on the day he was crowned in Egypt to bring his father. He also sent clothes to all his brothers’ children according to their number, and gave each of them 100 pieces of silver. He sent clothes to the wives of his brothers, taken from the garments of the king’s wives.

To help them on the journey, Joseph gave each of his brothers 10 men to serve them, their children, and everything they were bringing to Egypt. He also sent, by the hand of Benjamin, 10 suits of clothing for his 10 sons—more than the other children of Jacob received. Each of them also received 50 pieces of silver and 10 chariots courtesy of Pharaoh. To his father, he sent 10 donkeys loaded with the finest goods of Egypt, along with 10 female donkeys carrying grain, bread, and other food for the journey—for his father and everyone with him.

He sent to his sister Dinah garments of silver and gold, frankincense, myrrh, aloes, and a wide array of women’s ornaments. He also sent similar gifts from Pharaoh’s wives to Benjamin’s wives. To all his brothers and their wives, Joseph gave onyx stones, bdellium, and treasures from the noble households of Egypt. There was nothing valuable that Joseph didn’t send to his father’s house.

Joseph sends them away
Genesis 45:24-25, Jasher 54:86-90
Joseph sent his brothers off, and as they left, he told them, “See that you don’t argue on the way.”

Joseph went out with them to escort them as far as the borders of Egypt. He gave them instructions about bringing his father and the entire household to Egypt. He said, “Don’t fight along the way. This has all happened by God’s design to save a great people from starvation—there are still 5 more years of famine to come.”

He added, “When you arrive in Canaan, don’t shock my father with everything at once. Handle it with wisdom.”

Once he had finished speaking, Joseph turned back and returned to Egypt. The sons of Jacob continued on to the land of Canaan, full of joy and excitement to see their father Jacob. They left Egypt and entered Canaan, arriving at their father’s home.

Resolution

The sons of Jacob decide how to approach Jacob
Jasher 54:91-101
As they approached the land, they said to one another, “How should we handle this with our father? If we rush in and tell him everything at once, he’ll be overwhelmed and may not believe us.”

As they continued on and came near their homes, they saw Serach, the daughter of Asher, coming out to meet them. She was a wise and talented young woman who knew how to play the harp. They called to her, and she came and greeted them with a kiss. They gave her a harp and said, “Go ahead of us to our father. Sit before him and play the harp, and say these words.”

They told her exactly what to say, and she took the harp and hurried ahead. She came to Jacob, sat near him, and played skillfully. With a sweet voice, she sang, “My uncle Joseph is alive, ruling all over Egypt—he is not dead.”

She repeated these words several times, and Jacob listened. The words were pleasant to him, and he kept listening as she repeated them again and again. Joy filled Jacob’s heart from the beauty of her words, and the spirit of God came upon him. He knew she was telling the truth. Jacob blessed Serach for what she said and told her, “My daughter, may death never overcome you. You have brought life back to my spirit. Keep speaking just as you have, because your words have filled me with joy.”

She kept singing, and Jacob listened happily. God’s spirit was upon him. While he was still speaking with her, his sons arrived—riding on horses and chariots, dressed in royal robes, with servants running before them. Jacob stood up to greet them and saw his sons wearing the royal clothes and carrying all the treasures Joseph had sent.

The sons of Jacob tell Jacob what happened
Genesis 45:26-27, Jasher 54:102-104, Jubilees 43:23
They went up to their father and told him that Joseph was alive and distributing grain to all the nations, and that he was ruler over all of Egypt.

They said, “Know this—our brother Joseph is alive and ruling the entire land of Egypt. He’s the one who spoke with us, just as we told you.”

Jacob listened to everything they said, and his heart pounded because he didn’t believe them—until he saw what Joseph had sent: the gifts, the signs Joseph had given, and all the evidence. They showed him everything Joseph had sent, and gave each person the gifts meant for them. Then Jacob knew it was true, and he was overwhelmed with joy because of his son.

Jacob desires to see Joseph and makes a feast
Genesis 45:28, Jasher 54:105-110, Jubilees 43:24
At first, Jacob couldn’t believe it. He was overwhelmed and confused. But when he saw the wagons Joseph had sent, his spirit was revived, and he said, “It’s enough for me that Joseph is alive. I’ll go down and see him before I die.”

His sons told him everything that had happened to them. Jacob said, “I will go to Egypt to see my son and his children.”

Then Jacob got up, put on the garments Joseph had sent, washed himself, shaved, and placed the turban from Joseph on his head. Everyone in Jacob’s household, including their wives, also put on the garments Joseph had sent, and they were all overjoyed that Joseph was alive and ruling in Egypt.

News of this reached throughout Canaan, and many came to celebrate with Jacob. They were thrilled to hear he was still alive. Jacob held a feast that lasted 3 days. All the kings and nobles of Canaan came to eat, drink, and rejoice in his house.
