Addition

(1-minute read)

In a moment of divine power, God appeared to the 100-year-old Jacob, renaming him Israel and promising that nations and kings would rise from his lineage, inheriting the earth. As Jacob set up a sacred pillar at Bethel, he received a heavenly vision, revealing the future of his descendants and commanding him to remember and record all he had seen. Tragedy struck as Rachel, his beloved wife, died giving birth to Benjamin, the “Son of Sorrow,” and Jacob buried her, marking her grave with a pillar that stood as a testament to her memory. With his heart heavy, Jacob journeyed onward, reconnecting with his father Isaac as the winds of destiny continued to shape his life.

Go to the house of Abraham thy father and dwell with Isaac thy father until the day of the death of thy father.
23 For in Egypt thou shalt die in peace, and in this land thou shalt be buried with honour in the sepulchre of thy fathers, with Abraham and Isaac.
24 Fear not, for as thou hast seen and read it, thus shall it all be; and do thou write down everything as thou hast seen and read.’
25 And Jacob said: ‘Lord, how can I remember all that I have read and seen? ‘And he said unto him: ‘I will bring all things to thy remembrance.’
26 And he went up from him, and he awoke from his sleep, and he remembered everything which he had read and seen, and he wrote down all the words which he had read and seen.

Jubilees 32:27-29

27 And he celebrated there yet another day, and he sacrificed thereon according to all that he sacrificed on the former days, and called its name ‘Addition,’ for this day was added and the former days he called ‘The Feast ‘.

29 And its name was called ‘Addition,’ because that it was recorded amongst the days of the feast days, according to the number of the days of the year.

i. Jasher 36:8 states that Jacob is 100 years old. Jubilees 32:33 says that Benjamin is born during this same year. This statement in combination with the comments in Jasher 36:3 sets Jacob’s age to 105, not 100.
ii. This is the second time Jacob’s name was changed to Israel. The first time is in Genesis 32:27-28.
iii. Jasher 28:26-28 states that Rachel was born when Jacob was 56. Jasher 36:11 says Rachel died at 45 meaning that Jacob should be 101 but Jasher 36:8 says he was 100. According to Jubilees 32:33, the year 2143 is 49 years after Rachel’s birth, not 45. See the comments in Jasher 36:3 to see why this would be more accurate.

Exposition

J:46 | Y: 2214 | M: 7 | D: 24 | YHWH blesses Jacob and renames him to Israel a 2nd time
Genesis 35:9-13, Jasher 36:8, Jubilees 32:17-20
God appeared to Jacob again after he came out of Padanaram, when he was 100 years old, and blessed him. God said, “Your name is Jacob. But you will no longer be called Jacob—your name will be Israel.”

So He called him Israel. Then He said again, “I am the Lord Almighty, the one who created heaven and earth. Be fruitful and multiply. I will make you grow and increase greatly. Nations and kings will come from you, and your descendants will rule over every place the sons of men have walked. I will give your descendants all the land under heaven, and they will rule over the nations as they desire. After that, they will inherit the whole earth forever. The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac—I will give it to you and to your descendants after you.”

When He finished speaking, He went up from Jacob, and Jacob watched until He had ascended into heaven. Around that same time, Rachel, Jacob’s wife, became pregnant.

Rising Action

Jacob sets up a pillar, pours a drink offering, and calls the place Bethel

Climax

Jacob dreams of the history of the ages on 7 tablets
Jubilees 32:21-26
That night, Jacob had a vision and saw an angel come down from heaven holding 7 tablets. The angel gave the tablets to Jacob, and he read them and understood everything written on them—everything that would happen to him and to his sons throughout all ages. The angel showed him all that was written on the tablets and said, “Do not build on this place, do not make it an eternal sanctuary, and do not settle here. This is not the place. Go to your father’s house, the house of Abraham, and live with your father Isaac until his death. You will die peacefully in Egypt, and you will be buried with honor in this land in the tomb of your ancestors, with Abraham and Isaac. Don’t be afraid. Everything you’ve read and seen will happen just as it was shown to you. Write it all down exactly as you saw and read it.”

Jacob asked, “Lord, how can I remember everything I’ve read and seen?”

The angel replied, “I will help you remember everything.”

Then the angel went up from him, and Jacob woke up. He remembered everything he had seen and read, and he wrote down all the words.

Falling Action

Jacob celebrates Addition
Jubilees 32:27-29
Jacob celebrated another day there, offering sacrifices just like he had on the previous days. He called this day “Addition,” because it was added to the others, which he called “The Feast.”

It was revealed to him that this day should be celebrated and added to the 7 days of the feast, and it is written on the heavenly tablets. Its name was called “Addition” because it was recorded as one of the feast days, according to the number of days in the year.

M: 8 | D: 11 | Benjamin is born
Genesis 35:16-18, Jasher 36:9-10, 12, Jubilees 32:33
At that time, Jacob and all who were with him left Bethel to go to his father’s house in Hebron. While they were on the road and still had a short distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel went into difficult labor. The midwife said to her, “Don’t be afraid. You will have this son too.”

Rachel gave birth to a son during the night and named him Benoni, meaning “Son of my sorrow,” because she suffered greatly during childbirth. But Jacob named him Benjamin, because he was born in the land on the right hand, on the 11th day of the 8th month in the 1st year of the 6th week of that jubilee.

Rachel died
Genesis 35:19-20, Jasher 36:11, Jubilees 32:34
Rachel died, and Jacob buried her on the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem. He set up a pillar over her grave, right beside the road. That pillar still marks Rachel’s grave to this day. Rachel lived for 45 years before she died.
