Jacob, filled with joy, sets out on a journey to Haran, where he encounters shepherds and a mysterious well guarded by a heavy stone. Upon learning that Rachel, the daughter of Laban, is approaching with her flock, Jacob’s heart stirs. With a surge of strength and emotion, he rolls the stone away and waters her sheep. Overcome by love, Jacob kisses Rachel, weeping as he reveals his identity and his troubled past. Genesis 29:1

1 Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.

4 And Jacob rose up from that place quite rejoiced, and when he walked his feet felt light to him for joy, and he went from there to the land of the children of the East, and he returned to Haran and he set by the shepherd’s well.

Jacob got up from that place feeling joyful, and as he walked, his feet felt light from the joy in his heart. He went on to the land of the people of the East and returned to Haran, where he sat by the shepherds’ well.

Rising Action

Looking around, he saw a well in the field with 3 flocks of sheep lying nearby. The flocks were watered from that well, and a large stone covered its mouth. When all the flocks were gathered, they would roll the stone from the mouth of the well, water the sheep, and then put the stone back in its place.

Jacob said to the men, “My brothers, where are you from?”

They replied, “We’re from Haran.”

He asked, “Do you know Laban, the son of Nahor?”

They said, “We know him.”

Then Jacob said, “Is he doing well?”

They answered, “He’s doing well. Look, Rachel his daughter is coming with the sheep.”

Jacob said, “It’s still the middle of the day. It’s not time yet to gather the livestock. Water the sheep and go feed them.”

But they said, “We can’t, not until all the flocks are gathered and the stone is rolled away from the well’s mouth. Then we water the sheep.”

While he was still talking with them, Rachel, the daughter of Laban, came with her father’s sheep, for she was a shepherdess.

Eber lived 430 years after he fathered Peleg, and he had other sons and daughters. In the 2nd year of Jacob’s stay in Haran—which was the 79th year of Jacob’s life—Eber, the son of Shem, died. He was 464 years old when he died. When Jacob heard about Eber’s death, he was deeply grieved and mourned and lamented for him many days.
