(2-minute read)

In the ancient land blessed by the Lord, the saga unfolds with Abraham, wise and aged, tasking his devoted servant Eliezer with a momentous mission: to find a bride for Isaac, not among the Canaanites, but from his own kindred. Armed with ten camels and a caravan of men, Eliezer embarks on this perilous journey to Nahor, where divine providence guides him to the well at dusk. There, he encounters Rebekah, whose grace and kindness reveal her as the destined bride. Eliezer’s prayerful hopes are realized as he recognizes the Lord’s hand in her arrival, and with gifts of gold, he secures her family’s blessing for this fateful union.

As Rebekah’s family celebrates with a feast, morning brings Eliezer’s urgent desire to return swiftly to Abraham. Despite their reluctance, Rebekah’s resolute decision to leave with him echoes her bold spirit and destiny’s call. Laden with blessings and dreams of a prosperous future, she departs on camels with Eliezer, journeying toward her new life. The resolution sees Isaac in the fields, his heart stirred by the approaching caravan, and Rebekah, veiled and graceful, becoming his beloved. Together, they find solace and strength in each other, even as they face the trials of barrenness, bound by love and the Lord’s enduring presence.

2 And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh:
3 And I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell:
4 But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.
5 And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest?
6 And Abraham said unto him, Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again.
7 The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence.

31 But go to my land and to my birthplace, and take from thence a wife for my son, and the Lord God of Heaven and earth who took me from my father’s house and brought me to this place, and said unto me, To thy seed will I give this land for an inheritance for ever, he will send his angel before thee and prosper thy way, that thou mayest obtain a wife for my son from my family and from my father’s house.
32 And the servant answered his master Abraham and said, Behold I go to thy birthplace and to thy father’s house, and take a wife for thy son from there; but if the woman be not willing to follow me to this land, shall I take thy son back to the land of thy birthplace?
33 And Abraham said unto him, Take heed that thou bring not my son hither again, for the Lord before whom I have walked he will send his angel before thee and prosper thy way.

Exposition

J: 43 | Y: 2089 | Eliezer commissioned to find a wife for Isaac
Genesis 24:1-9, Jasher 24:29-34a
Abraham was now old and well advanced in years, and the LORD had blessed him in every way.

He called for Eliezer, his chief servant who managed everything he owned, to give him instructions concerning his household. Eliezer came and stood before him. Abraham said, “Look, I am old and don’t know the day of my death. Since I’m advanced in years, I ask you to place your hand under my thigh and swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and earth. Do not take a wife for my son from this place or from this land, from among the daughters of the Canaanites where we live. Instead, go to my homeland and to the place of my birth, and take a wife for my son from there. The LORD God of heaven and earth, who took me from my father’s house and brought me here, and who said to me, ‘To your descendants I will give this land as a lasting inheritance,’ he will send his angel ahead of you to make your journey successful, so that you may find a wife for my son from my family and from my father’s house.”

The servant replied, “I’ll go to your birthplace and to your father’s house to find a wife for your son. But if the woman is unwilling to follow me back to this land, should I take your son there instead?”

Abraham said, “Be very careful not to take my son back there. The LORD, before whom I have walked faithfully, will send his angel ahead of you and make your way successful. But if the woman is unwilling to come back with you, you will be released from this oath—just don’t take my son there.”

So Eliezer placed his hand under his master Abraham’s thigh and swore to him about the matter.

Rising Action

Eliezer leaves on his journey to find a wife for Isaac
Genesis 24:10-11, Jasher 24:34b-35
Eliezer took 10 of his master’s camels, 10 of his master’s servants, and set out, since he was entrusted with all of Abraham’s wealth. He headed to Haran in Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor, to find a wife for Isaac, the son of Abraham.

While they were traveling, Abraham sent for Isaac from the house of Shem and Eber, and they brought Isaac back to his father’s home in Beersheba. Meanwhile, Eliezer and his men continued on to Haran.

When they arrived, he made the camels kneel down outside the city near a well of water in the evening—the time when women come out to draw water.

Eliezer prays to YHWH
Genesis 24:12-15, Jasher 24:36
Eliezer, Abraham’s servant, prayed, saying, “O God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today and show kindness to my master. I am standing here by the well, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. Let it be that the young woman to whom I say, ‘Please lower your pitcher so I may drink,’ and who replies, ‘Drink, and I’ll also give water to your camels,’—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. Through this I will know that you’ve shown kindness to my master.”

Before he had finished speaking, Rebekah came out. She was born to Bethuel, the son of Milcah, who was the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother. She had a pitcher on her shoulder.

Eliezer meets Rebekah at the well
Genesis 24:16-27, Jasher 24:37, 40
The young woman was very beautiful, a virgin whom no man had known. She was 10 years old. She went down to the well, filled her pitcher, and came back up.

Eliezer ran to meet her and said, “Please, let me drink a little water from your pitcher.”

She replied, “Drink, my lord,” and quickly lowered her pitcher to her hand and gave him a drink.

After giving him a drink, she said, “I’ll draw water for your camels too, until they’ve finished drinking.”

She hurried, emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran back to the well to draw more water. She continued until she had drawn water for all his camels. Meanwhile, Eliezer silently watched her, wondering if the LORD had made his journey successful.

When the camels had finished drinking, Eliezer took a gold earring weighing half a shekel and 2 bracelets weighing 10 shekels of gold for her wrists. He asked, “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me. Is there room in your father’s house for us to stay?”

The LORD heard Eliezer’s prayer for the sake of his master Abraham. Rebekah answered, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.”

She added, “We have plenty of straw and feed, and room for you to spend the night.”

The man bowed his head and worshipped the LORD, saying, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not failed to show kindness and truth to my master. Being on this journey, the LORD has led me straight to the house of my master’s relatives.”

Climax

Rebekah goes home to tell her family
Genesis 24:28-30a
The young woman ran and told her mother’s household everything that had happened. Rebekah had a brother named Laban, and he ran out to the man at the well. When he saw the earring and the bracelets on his sister’s hands, and heard the words of Rebekah his sister saying, “This is what the man said to me.”

Laban invites Eliezer to their home
Genesis 24:30b-32
Laban went to the man and found him standing by the camels at the well. He said, “Come in, you who are blessed by the LORD! Why are you standing outside? I’ve prepared the house and made room for the camels.”

So the man came into the house. He unloaded the camels and provided straw and feed for them, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him.

Eliezer retells the story of why he was sent and what happened
Genesis 24:33-50, Jasher 24:38
They set food before him to eat, but he said, “I won’t eat until I’ve shared my mission.”

They said, “Speak on.”

He said, “I’m Abraham’s servant. The LORD has greatly blessed my master, and he has become wealthy. He’s given him flocks, herds, silver, gold, male and female servants, camels, and donkeys. Sarah, my master’s wife, gave him a son in her old age, and my master has given everything he owns to that son.

My master made me swear an oath, saying, ‘You must not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live. Instead, go to my father’s house and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son.’

I asked my master, ‘What if the woman won’t come back with me?’ He said to me, ‘The LORD, before whom I have walked, will send his angel with you and make your journey successful. You will take a wife for my son from my family and my father’s house. Then you’ll be released from my oath if you go to my family and they won’t give her to you—you’ll be free from your oath.’

Today I came to the well and prayed, ‘LORD, God of my master Abraham, if you will now make my journey successful: here I am standing by the well. Let it happen that when a young woman comes to draw water and I say to her, “Please let me drink a little water from your jar,” and she says to me, “Drink, and I’ll draw water for your camels too”—let her be the one the LORD has chosen for my master’s son.’

Before I had even finished praying in my heart, Rebekah came out with her pitcher on her shoulder. She went down to the well and drew water. I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’ She quickly lowered her pitcher and said, ‘Drink, and I’ll give your camels water too.’ So I drank, and she watered the camels as well.

Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She replied, ‘I’m the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.’ I put the earring on her nose and the bracelets on her wrists.

Then I bowed down, worshipped the LORD, and praised the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the right way to take the daughter of my master’s brother for his son.

Now, if you’re going to show kindness and truth to my master, tell me. But if not, tell me, so I’ll know whether to turn to the right or the left.”

Then Laban and Bethuel answered, “This matter comes from the LORD; we can’t say anything to you, good or bad.”

Bethuel offers Rebekah to Eliezer
Genesis 24:51-53, Jasher 24:39
They all blessed the LORD who had brought this about and said, “Here is Rebekah before you—take her and go. Let her be the wife of your master’s son, as the LORD has spoken.”

They gave Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel, to be Isaac’s wife.

When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed to the ground and worshipped the LORD. Then he brought out silver jewelry, gold jewelry, and clothing, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave valuable gifts to her brother and her mother.

Falling Action

They celebrate with a meal
Genesis 24:54a, Jasher 24:41
That night, Bethuel, Laban, and their household prepared a feast. Eliezer and his men ate, drank, and celebrated there.

They depart the next day
Genesis 24:54b-61, Jasher 24:42-43
The next morning they got up, and Eliezer said, “Send me back to my master.”

Rebekah’s brother and mother replied, “Let the young woman stay with us a few days—at least 10. After that, she can go.”

But he said, “Don’t delay me, since the LORD has made my journey successful. Send me off so I can return to my master.”

They said, “Let’s call the young woman and ask her directly.”

They called Rebekah and asked, “Will you go with this man?”

She said, “I will go.”

So they sent away their sister Rebekah, along with her nurse Deborah (the daughter of Uz), Abraham’s servant, and his men.

They blessed Rebekah and said to her, “You are our sister. May you become the mother of thousands upon thousands. May your descendants possess the gates of those who hate them.”

Then Rebekah and her maidservants mounted the camels and followed the man. The servant took Rebekah and set off on his way.

Resolution

Isaac and Rebekah meet
Genesis 24:62-66
Isaac had come from the direction of the well Lahairoi, for he lived in the southern region. One evening, he went out into the field to meditate. As he looked up, he saw camels coming.

Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac, and she got down from her camel. She asked the servant, “Who is that man walking in the field to meet us?”

The servant replied, “That’s my master.” So she took her veil and covered herself.

Then the servant told Isaac everything that had happened.

Isaac marries Rebekah
Genesis 24:67, 25:20, Jasher 24:44-45, 25:28a, Jubilees 19:10
In the 4th year of that time, Abraham arranged for his son Isaac to marry Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel (son of Nahor, Abraham’s brother), sister of Laban, and daughter of Melca, who had been Nahor’s wife.

Isaac brought Rebekah into his mother Sarah’s tent, took her as his wife, and loved her. Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

Isaac was 40 years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of his uncle Bethuel, a Syrian from Padanaram and sister to Laban the Syrian.

At that time, Rebekah was barren—she had no children. Isaac lived with his father in the land of Canaan, and the LORD was with him.
