Should I be worried about the books in heaven? Part 1

Many of us are familiar with the book of life that is mentioned in Revelation, but were you aware that there are other books in heaven that contain information about you and your life? Did you know that these books will be opened on Judgment Day? Today I would like to go over with you a plethora of Scriptures that deal with this topic that I believe you will find most fascinating! Let’s begin with the end in Revelation.

John roundedRevelation 20:12 (KJV)

12And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

This Scripture passage mentions ‘books’ plus ‘another book.’ The ‘other’ book is clarified to us here as the book of life. Revelation 13:8 and 21:27 both tell us specifically that it’s the Lamb’s book of life; the lamb being Jesus Christ. Some have said that Jesus never wrote a book, but au contraire, mon frère, here Christ takes ownership of this book and as we will see, He writes down and erases names from this book!

This passage in Revelation is awfully similar to that in Daniel.

Daniel 7:9-10 (KJV)Daniel rounded
9I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. 10A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.

So in both accounts you see that the books are opened when it’s time to judge the people. So now let’s work backwards and go back to the beginning. I’ll answer questions like:

  • At what point is my name written in the heavenly book?
  • What can cause my name to be erased?
  • How important is it that my name be written in the Lamb’s book of life?
  • What exactly are those ‘other books’ and what is inside them?

š~The Book of Life

Let’s discuss when the Bible mentions the book of life for the first time. Here in Exodus, Moses pleads with YHWH for the people. The text reads:

Moses roundedExodus 32:30-33 (KJV)

30And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the Lord; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin. 31And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold. 32Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin–; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written. 33And the Lord said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.

So the people sinned. Moses believes that YHWH may not forgive their sin. If He doesn’t, then Moses wants his name to be erased out of YHWH’s book and not them. That is so self-sacrificial! This is similar to what Paul said in Romans 9:1-3. So is this even possible? No. YHWH says that whoever has sinned will have their name erased. You can’t have your name erased on behalf of someone else’s.

š~How is Our Name Written?

So the question is, when did the Israelites have their name written in YHWH’s book? One scenario is that their name was written before birth or at the time of birth and then later when they sinned, YHWH erased their name of which YHWH could re-write it in later on if they only repented. Another scenario is that their names were written in YHWH’s book after their salvation from bondage in Egypt and later when they sinned, their names were erased (which would go against the once-saved-always-saved doctrine). This Scripture is not clear on how this happens. In fact, this is the very first time YHWH’s book is ever mentioned and the text doesn’t give us any further details. What we know for sure is that if you sin, your name is erased. The same is said in Deuteronomy 29:18-20.

David refers to YHWH’s book in Psalm 69:4,26-28 as the book of the living and in some translations as the book of life. He basically says that only the righteous are written in that book. Which means that they aren’t sinning. First John 2:9,11, 3:10,14-15 also confirms this.

At the beginning of Luke 10, Jesus appoints 70 disciples to go to the places where Jesus was about to go to. When they did, they came back rejoicing that the devils were subject to them through the name of Christ. But Jesus told them not to rejoice over that, but rather to rejoice because their names were written in Heaven.

Our focus should always be on eternity. When we do good works for God, we should not brag by saying, ‘Look at what I’ve accomplished since being a Christian’, but rather, ‘Look at how God has been glorified when He used me as His vessel of righteousness. To God be the glory!’

Your reputation for doing the work of the Lord will be noticed by others which can lead them to believe that your name is written in the Book of Life. What a joy and an honor it is for someone else to declare that because of your dedication to the gospel message, that your name is written in heaven, just like when Paul said in:

Philippians 4:3 (KJV)Paul rounded
3And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourerswhose names are in the book of life.

Also in:
Hebrews 12:23 (KJV)
23To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

So if you think about it, just doing the things that YHWH commands allows you to not only have your name written in heaven but also to keep it there.

š~How is your name erased?

By the way, how does our name not get blotted out from the Book of Life? It is when we overcome our sinful nature. We repent from our sins and put our trust in Christ.

John roundedRevelation 3:5 (KJV)

5He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

Have you overcame the sinful lifestyle you once had? Have you stopped sinning as the scripture commands? I realize that after salvation there are times when you are going to sin. But that doesn’t give us an excuse to sin every day.

Romans 6:1-2 (KJV)Paul rounded

1What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

So if you want your name erased from the book of life, just live a life of sin!

š~The Importance of Having Your Name Written

We are living in the end times. The world will soon transform from having multiple views about God to simply 2 views. You either will worship the true living God or your will worship the false god which is the beast.

John roundedRevelation 13:1,4,6-8 (KJV)

1And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. 4And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? 6And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. 7And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. 8And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

This tells us that the ones who are not written in the Lamb’s book of life will worship the dragon and the beast. All the more reason to make sure that your name is written in YHWH’S book. You are guaranteed not to receive the mark of the beast if your name is in the book of life.

The Lord has prophesied well in advance the outcome of the beast.

Revelation 17:7-8 (KJV)John rounded

7And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. 8The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

The ones who follow the beast will see its final destruction by God. These are the same ones who asked themselves, “Who is like unto the beast? Who is able to make war with him?” The answer is God and God alone and He will be victorious! But these people will also have their destiny sealed.

John roundedRevelation 20:15 (KJV)

15And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

This is one of the most serious warnings found in the scriptures. It is imperative to have your name written in the book of life. No one should ever want to willingly go into the lake of fire. Speaking on heaven,

John roundedRevelation 21:27 (KJV)

27And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

This is where I want to be. Not the lake of fire. I hope that those who are reading this blog have made the commitment to Christ and have forsaken their old sinful lifestyle. And if not, that you make that commitment before you go do sleep tonight. I hope to join you in Heaven one day!

There is a final warning at the end of the book of Revelation which states this:

John roundedRevelation 22:19 (KJV)

19And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

So, these are the scriptures that are concerned with the Book of Life. I’ve shown you how your name is written in there, how to keep it from being erased, and how extremely important it is for you to have it there. In Part 2 of this blog, I’ll show you what those ‘other books’ are. Here’s a hint: They contain everything you’ve ever done, said, and thought about!
