Titus 2

Titus 2 (KJV)

2 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: 2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.

Titus 2:1-2 Paul urges Titus to speak sound doctrine to them. Specifically to the aged men that they make changes to their lifestyle and personality.

3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; 4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

Titus 2:3-5 Paul addresses the aged women also to practice good behavior, to change their lifestyle, and that they should teach the younger women how to live properly. Is this a common practice at your church?

6 Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.

Titus 2:6 Paul summarizes his admonition to the young men by requesting that they do the same as both the aged men and aged women as it applies to the young men.

7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, 8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

Titus 2:7-8 If Titus is to exhort others, he himself needs to have high standards. In this way, no person will have something bad to say about him. According to the other Scriptures concerning Titus, I would expect that these recommendations won’t be hard from him.

9 Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; 10 Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.

Titus 2:9-10 Paul tells Titus to also exhort servants so that they will be good examples as well.

11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

Titus 2:11-14 Paul here summarizes everything he has said and reiterates it because we are a saved people. Saved people have a changed lifestyle for the better. We also look for the Second coming of Christ who has redeemed us. Compare this table which compares a few of the groups that Paul listed.

15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

Titus 2:15 Paul tells Titus that these are the commendable things he is to speak, exhort, and rebuke with authority and to not let any man despise him because of it. This is great advice since when a person does do this, they are susceptible to ridicule and judgment.
