Ephesians 2

Ephesians 2 (KJV)

OUR PRIOR SINFUL STATE

1And you hath he quickened, who were dead G3498 in trespasses G3900 and sins; G266 2Wherein in time past G4218 ye walked G4043 according to the course G165 of this world, G2889 according to the prince G758 of the power G1849 of the air, G109 the spirit G4151 that now worketh G1754 in the children G5207 of disobedience:G543 3Among whom also we all had our conversation G390 in times past G4218 in the lusts G1939 of our flesh, G4561 fulfilling G4160 the desires G2307 of the flesh G4561 and of the mind; G1271and were by nature G5449 the children G5043 of wrath, G3709 even as others. 4But God, G2316 who is rich G4145 in mercy,G1656 for his great G4183 love G26 wherewith he loved G25 us, 5Even when we were dead G3498 in sins, G3900 hath quickened us together with G4806 Christ,G5547 (by grace G5485 ye are saved;) G4982

Ephesians 2:1-5 Paul reminds us of what it was like before Christ. We were dead in trespasses and sins, walking after the prince of the power of the air according to the course of this world, and our conduct was after the lusts of our flesh and mind. We were children of disobedience and children of wrath like everyone else. But Christ, by the mercy and love of God, has taken us from our dead state and made us alive in Him by His grace.

Compare “hath he quickened” and “hath quickened us” to: Psa 71:20, 119:50,93, John 5:21,24 6:63, Rom 4:17, 1 Cor 15:45, Col 2:13, 1 Pet 3:18

Compare “prince of the power of the air” to John 12:31, Acts 26:18

Compare “children of disobedience” and “children of wrath” to: Deu 9:7-8,22, Eph 5:6, Col 3:6

Compare “by grace ye are saved” to: Acts 15:11, Eph 2:8, 2 Tim 1:9

OUR NEW STATE

6And hath raised us up together, G4891 and made us sit together G4776 in heavenly G2032 places in Christ G5547 Jesus: G2424 7That in the ages G165 to come he might shew G1731 the exceeding G5235 riches G4149 of his grace G5485 in his kindness G5544 toward G1909 us through Christ G5547 Jesus. G2424

Ephesians 2:6-7 Christ has not only spiritually resurrected us, but has raised us up to sit in heavenly places in the future. By doing this, He will be able to show the exceeding riches of His grace because we will see everyone Christ has redeemed.

Compare “in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace” to: Isa 64:4, Mark 10:30, Luke 18:30, 1 Cor 2:9

HOW HE SAVES US

8For by grace G5485 are ye saved G4982 through G1223 faith; G4102 and that not of yourselves: it is the gift G1435 of God: G2316 9Not of works, G2041 lest any man should boast. G2744

Ephesians 2:8-9 We have faith in God and He saves us by the gift of His grace. Nothing within ourselves, like our works, can save us because otherwise we would boast about it.

Compare “through faith” to: Deu 32:30, Hab 2:4, Mark 11:22, Luke 7:50, 18:42, Acts 20:21, Rom 1:17, 3:27-28,31, 4:5,14-16, 5:1-2, Gal 3:24, Heb 6:12, 10:38, 11:6, 1 John 5:4

Compare “not of works” to: Gal 2:16,20, 3:11-12

Compare “gift of God” to: John 4:10, Acts 8:20, Rom 6:23

WHY HE SAVES US

10For we are his workmanship, G4161 created G2936 in Christ G5547 Jesus G2424 unto good G18 works, G2041 which God G2316 hath before ordained G4282 that we should walk G4043 in them. G846

Ephesians 2:10 Christ saves us because we are His workmanship and were originally created to do good works. Therefore, now that we are saved, we are to do good works.

Compare “we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus” to: Eze 11:19, 18:31, 36:26, 2 Cor 5:17, Gal 6:15, Col 3:10

Compare “unto good works” to: Mat 5:16, John 10:32, Acts 9:36, 2 Cor 9:8, Col 1:10, 1 Tim 2:9-10, 3:1, 5:9-10,25, 6:18, 2 Tim 2:21, 3:17, Titus 2:7,14, 3:1,8,14, Heb 10:24, 13:21, James 2:17-26

Compare “that we should walk in them” to: Gen 5:24, 6:9, 17:1, 48:15, Exo 16:4, 18:20, Lev 18:4, 26:3-4, Deu 5:33, 8:6, 10:12, 11:22, 13:4, 19:9, 28:9, 30:16, Jos 22:5, 1 Kings 2:3-4, 3:14, 6:12, 8:58,61, 9:4, 11:38, 2 Kings 20:3, 23:3, 2 Chr 6:14, 17:14, 34:31, Psa 15:2, 84:11, 119:1-2, 128:1, Pro 14:2, 28:18, Isa 33:15-16, 38:3, Jer 7:23, Eze 11:19-20, 20:19-20, Hos 14:9, Luke 1:5-6, Acts 9:31, 21:24, Rom 6:4, 8:1,4, Gal 5:16,25, Eph 5:2,8, Col 2:6, 1 John 1:7, 2:6, 2 John 1:4,6, 3 John 1:3-4

RECALL OUR OLD LIFE

11Wherefore remember, G3421 that ye being in time past G4218 Gentiles G1484 in the flesh, G4561 who are called Uncircumcision G203 by that which is called the Circumcision G4061 in the flesh G4561 made by hands; G5499 12That at that time G2540 ye were without Christ, G5547 being aliens G526 from the commonwealth G4174 of Israel, G2474 and strangers G3581 from the covenants G1242 of promise, G1860 having no hope, G1680 and without God G112 in the world: G2889

Ephesians 2:11-12 As saints, we are still to remember that we used to be Gentiles in the flesh, having no hope, without God, uncircumcised of the heart, aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise. This is also a good reminder as we witness to others knowing that they are also in this state.

Compare “Gentiles in the flesh” to: Gen 10:5, Mat 6:31-32, Acts 14:27, 15:3,14,17, 26:20,23, 28:28, Rom 2:14, 9:30, 1 Cor 10:20, 12:2, Eph 4:17, 1 The 2:16, 4:5, 1 Pet 4:3

Compare “covenants of promise” to: Gen 9:9-17, 15:18-21, 17:7-14, Exo 19:3-8, 24:7-8, 31:12-17, 34:27-28, Isa 59:21, Jer 31:31-33, Mat 26:26-28, Mark 14:22-24, Luke 1:67-79, 22:13-20, Acts 3:25-26, Rom 9:3-4, Gal 3:13-18, Heb 8, 10:15-17

RESULT OF OUR SALVATION

13But now in Christ G5547 Jesus G2424 ye who sometimes were far off G3112 are made nigh G1451 by the blood G129 of Christ. G5547 14For he is our peace, G1515 who hath made both one, G1520 and hath broken down G3089 the middle wall G3320 of partition G5418 between us; 15Having abolished G2673 in his flesh G4561 the enmity, G2189 even the law G3551 of commandments G1785 contained in ordinances; G1378 for to make G2936 in himself of twain G1417 one G1519 G1520 new G2537 man, so making peace; G1515 16And that he might reconcile G604 both unto God G2316 in one G1520 body G4983 by the cross, G4716 having slain G615 the enmity G2189 thereby:

Ephesians 2:13-16 When we were in our sinful state, we were far from God. Christ, who is our peace, makes peace by bringing us near to God by His blood on the cross making us one instead of two. A similar thing happens in marriage. Christ has broken down the separation, or enmity, which is the law of commandments contained in ordinances. What are these laws of commandments contained in ordinances?

Compare “made nigh by the blood of Christ” to: Mat 26:28, Mark 14:24, Luke 22:20, Heb 9:14, 1 Pet 1:2, 1 John 1:7, Rev 1:5

Compare “the enmity” to: Rom 8:7, James 4:4

OUR RELATION TO GOD

17And came G2064 and preached G2097 peace G1515 to you which were afar off, G3112 and to them that were nigh. G1451 18For through G1223 him we both have access G4318 by one G1520 Spirit G4151 unto the Father. G3962 19Now therefore ye are no more strangers G3581 and foreigners, G3941 but fellowcitizens G4847 with the saints, G40 and of the household G3609 of God; G2316

Ephesians 2:17-19 Christ came and preached peace to the Jews and to the Gentiles. It’s because of Christ that we have access to God the Father through the Holy Spirit. God now declares that we are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with all those who are called saints in the household of God.

THE BUILDING OF GOD

20And are built G2026 upon the foundation G2310 of the apostles G652 and prophets, G4396 Jesus G2424Christ G5547 himself being the chief corner G204stone; 21In whom all the building G3619 fitly framed together G4883 groweth G837 unto an holy G40 temple G3485 in the Lord: G2962 22In whom ye also are builded together G4925 for an habitation G2732 of God G2316 through the Spirit. G4151

Ephesians 2:20-22 Jesus Christ is our chief cornerstone, the apostles and prophets are the foundation, and the building is the saints which form a holy temple which becomes the habitation of God through the Holy Spirit. This is a great comparison to the city of God that we read in Revelation 21.

Compare “Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone” to: Psa 118:22, Isa 28:16, Mat 21:42, Mark 12:10, Luke 20:17, Acts 4:10-12, 1 Pet 2:6-7

Challenge Questions:

Are we sitting in heavenly places now or does it take place in the future?

If we once were ‘strangers of the covenants of promise,’ then what does that make us now?

What is the ‘middle way of partition,’ ‘the enmity,’ and ‘the law of commandments contained in ordinances?’

If we are built upon the foundation of the apostles and the prophets, does that mean they we don’t have apostles and prophets today?
