Prophets by far are spoken of more often than any other positions in the five-fold ministry. They go back all the way to the beginning in Genesis. Many of them wrote books and we definitely will see prophets in the end times. So what is a prophet? The most simplest definition is that they are a speaker. In Bible terms, it is one who speaks for God. Their primary job is to tell us the will of God and their secondary job is to tell us what will happen in the future. Let’s look at what God says a prophet is.

Exodus 4:10-16 (KJV)
10 And Moses said unto the  Lord, O my  Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.  11  And the  Lord said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the  Lord12  Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.  13 And he said, O my  Lord, send, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt send.  14 And the anger of the  Lord was kindled against Moses, and he said, Is not Aaron the Levite thy brother? I know that he can speak well. An apostle is one that is sent forth. In this passage, Jesus is sending forth his disciples to the lost sheep of the house of Israel and goes into detail as to what will happen and how they should handle themselves.

Matthew 10 (KJV)

Acts 1:21-26 (KJV)

21 Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,  22  Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.  23 And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.  24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,  25  That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.  26 And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

After Judas died, the apostles felt it necessary to replace him with someone who was with them from the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. They appointed two and prayed to God about it. The lot fell on Matthias who became the new 12th apostle. Of course, there was no way to keep this 12-apostle group going because eventually all witnesses of Jesus would die out.

Acts 2:37-47 (KJV)

37  Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?  38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.  39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.  40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.  41  Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.  42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.  43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.   44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;  45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.  46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,  47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. Here we see the apostles preaching, evangelizing, testifying, exhorting, baptizing, had a true doctrine, performed signs and wonders, and made fellowship with the new believers.

Acts 5:12-32 (KJV)

12 And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people;(and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch.  13 And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them.  14  And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.)  15 Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.  16 There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.  17 Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation,  18 And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison.  19 But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said,  20 Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.  21 And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.  22 But when the officers came, and found them not in the prison, they returned and told,  23 Saying, The prison truly found we shut with all safety, and the keepers standing without before the doors: but when we had opened, we found no man within.  24 Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, they doubted of them whereunto this would grow. 25 Then came one and told them, saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple, and teaching the people.  26 Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them without violence: for they feared the people, lest they should have been stoned.  27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them,  28 Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.  29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.  30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.  31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.  32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

Again we see the apostles performing many signs and wonders, healing the people, teaching, preaching, and being fully obedient to God.

Acts 15:1-6 (KJV)

1And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.  When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.  And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.  And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them.  But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.  And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.

The apostles were elders that were sought after for their advice on tough Biblical questions.

We know that Paul was also an apostle, even though he wasn’t among the original 12 who was with Jesus during His 3 1/2 year ministry. We see this referenced in his letters such as Rom 1:1, 11:13, 1 Cor 1:1, 2 Cor 1:1, Gal 1:1, Eph 1:1, Col 1:1, 1 Tim 1:1, 2:7, 2 Tim 1:1,11, and Titus 1:1. Peter also referenced himself as an apostle in his letters in 1 Pet 1:1 and 2 Pet 1:1.

1 Corinthians 4:9-16 (KJV)

For I think that God hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men.  10 We are fools for Christ’s sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised.  11 Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace;  12 And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it:  13 Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day.  14 I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you.  15 For though ye have ten thousand instructers in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.  16  Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me.

Paul says that the apostles were set forth last. This is because before Jesus came along, there were no apostles. These apostles have a unique job that has never been done before. This is why they are a spectacle(or theater) to the worlds, angels, and men. Paul goes out of his way to show how demanding the job of apostleship is. Paul urges the Corinthian saints to be like him and follow his example in Christ.

1 Corinthians 9:1-14 (KJV)

1Am I am not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?  If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord.  Mine answer to them that do examine me is this,  Have we not power to eat and to drink?   Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles,and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?  Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?  Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?  Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?  For it is written in the law of Moses, thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?  10 Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.  11  If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?  12 If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.  13 Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?  14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

Paul says that to seal his apostleship, he must make apostles. These apostles even include women. Also, he tells us that apostles who minister in spiritual things should be compensated with physical things.

1 Corinthians 12:27-31 (KJV)

27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.  28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles,secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.  29  Are all apostles?are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?  30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?  31  But covet earnestly the best gifts:and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

It is God who sets apostles in a church but not everyone is an apostle.

2 Corinthians 11:4-15 (KJV)

For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.  For I suppose I was not a whit behind the very chiefest apostles.  But though I be rude in speech, yet not in knowledge; but we have been throughly made manifest among you in all things.  Have I committed an offence in abasing myself that ye might be exalted, because I have preached to you the gospel of God freely?  I robbed other churches, taking wages of them, to do you service.  And when I was present with you, and wanted, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was lacking to me the brethren which came from Macedonia supplied: and in all things I have kept myself from being burdensome unto you, and so will I keep myself.  10 As the truth of Christ is in me, no man shall stop me of this boasting in the regions of Achaia.  11 Wherefore? because I love you not? God knoweth.  12 But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we.  13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.   14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.  15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

Paul considers himself less than the other apostles. He also tells us that there are false apostles. If there were only 12 original apostles and then Paul, there would be no reason to warn about false apostles because everybody knows who these 13 are. But since there were more than 13 apostles, Paul warns us to test them to make sure they are true apostles of Christ.

2 Corinthians 12:11-12 (KJV)

11 I am become a fool in glorying; ye have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing am I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I be nothing.  12 Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.

Paul again considers himself less than the other apostles which is nothing to brag about. He also says that there are signs of an apostle which include patience, signs, wonders, and mighty deeds.

Ephesians 2:18-22 (KJV)

18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.  19  Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;  20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;  21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:   22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Paul says that once we become a Christian, we have become grafted in to be spiritual Jews. Jesus was the chief corner stone and the apostles and prophets were the foundation. We as Christians are the building that rests on this foundation.

Ephesians 3:2-6 (KJV)

If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:  How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,  Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)   Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;  That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:

Paul confirms that it wasn’t until the present day that God revealed through the apostles and prophets that the Gentiles can be grafted in to the body of Christ.

Hebrews 3:1 (KJV)

3 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;

The only time apostle is capitalized is when it is referring to Jesus, not the original 12 apostles. He is the Apostle that sends apostles.

Revelation 2:1-2 (KJV)

1Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;  I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:

Jesus says that the church of Ephesus has tried them which say they are apostles and are not. This means that there are true and false apostles. If the apostleship ended with the original 12 + Paul, then we wouldn’t have to test apostles, we would discard them altogether. But since it didn’t end, we must test each apostle to see if they are true or not.

Revelation 18:16-20 (KJV)

16 And saying, Alas, alas that great city,that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!  17  For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,  18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city!  19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.  20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her. 

This apostate city that is destroyed in the end times will bring rejoicing to the apostles and prophets that exist during that day because it will finally come to an end.

Revelation 21:14 (KJV)

14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

Paul mentioned in Ephesians 2:20 that the apostles were the foundation of the church. Here in Revelation we see that the original 12 apostles have the great honor of having their names in the foundation of the New Jerusalem.

In summary, apostles are people who are sent by God to do His work. This includes performing signs and wonders, teaching, preaching, evangelizing, and healing people. They give of themselves selflessly and take great joy in increasing the kingdom of God. An apostle is used for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, and for the edifying of the body of Christ. Paul warns us about false apostles. This means that it is possible for someone to become an apostle and abuse their position. In that case, we should always hold those in leadership positions to a high standards.

Baptism Part 2

Matthew 28:18-20 (KJV)

18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Mark 16:15-16 (KJV)

15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Jesus tells His disciples that they are to teach and preach to the nations, then baptize them, followed by additional teaching which includes obeying YHWH’s commandments. He says that if you believe and are baptized you will be saved, but if you don’t believe you won’t be saved. So there are basically three situations involved here. Jesus mentions the first and third situation and the second situation is implied. The second situation still results in salvation. This can be seen in situations like the thief on the cross who believed but wasn’t baptized.


Acts 1:4-5 (KJV)

And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

Jesus talks about John’s baptism which was with water and the Holy Spirit’s baptism which John referred to as with fire. These baptisms are the same but different. Same in that they both take you from one state of being to the next, and different in that one is physically and one is spiritual. This baptism that Jesus spoke of literally occurred on the Day of Pentecost in the next chapter.

Acts 2:1-11 (KJV)

1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

These men were celebrating the Feast of Weeks when the Holy Spirit did descend upon them with fire. They became filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking with other languages. This is evident by the various Jews who came from other countries who spoke with their native tongues. These men began speaking in other people’s native tongue without having been taught it. As we enter into the rest of the acts of the apostles, we’ll notice that there are times when the Holy Spirit indwells into individuals and they will begin speaking in tongues, or other languages. There are other times when they will not. It really just depends on the situation. The point that needs to be made here is that speaking in tongues is equivalent to speaking another language. Now let’s look at a series of Scriptures in the acts of the apostles.

Acts 2:38-41 (KJV)

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. 40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. 44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;

So Peter preaches the same form of baptism that John preached. The person is to repent from their current lifestyle, believe in Jesus Christ, and begin walking with God. That transition period is marked by the outward expression of baptism. So the prerequisites for baptism are as follows:

  • Repent of your current sinful lifestyle
  • Believe in Jesus Christ

We see this practiced in the next passage.

Acts 8:12-17 (KJV)

12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. 14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: 15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: 16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

Here we see Philip preaching and baptizing people. Again, we see Philip preaching the same as John who said, “Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” It’s interesting that these people did not receive the Holy Spirit at baptism. It happened later when the disciples laid their hands on them.

Acts 8:26-40 (KJV)

26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert. 27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, 28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet. 29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. 30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? 31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. 32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: 33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. 34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. 36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. 39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.

Here Philip uses the Old Testament to preach Jesus to the Ethiopian eunuch. This is the only text that they had to go by. We can actually do the same. Philip told him how important baptism was before telling him how to get saved. When prompted, Philip told him that he must believe and when the eunuch did, he was fully immersed in the water that was nearby.

Acts 9:17-20 (KJV)

17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. 18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. 19 And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus. 20 And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.

This is the story of how Paul was converted. Jesus Himself came to him and told him what to do. Once he met Ananias, he received his sight, was baptized, and received the Holy Spirit. He then began preaching to others that Jesus was the Son of God.

Acts 10:34-48 (KJV)

34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: 35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him. 36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all: ) 37 That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; 38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. 39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: 40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; 41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. 42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. 43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. 44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

YHWH teaches Peter a lesson concerning people who may be unclean. Just because they are, doesn’t mean that you can’t associate with them at all. Also, just because someone is unclean, doesn’t mean that it is impossible for them to be saved. Once Peter learns this, he begins preaching about how God saves us through Jesus Christ. Everyone who was there received the Holy Spirit. These Gentiles began speaking in other languages and Peter commanded that they be baptized.

Acts 16:13-15 (KJV)

13 And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither. 14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul. 15 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

Paul was sent to Macedonia through a vision and when he was there for a few days, he decided to go to a river. There he met Lydia who already worshipped God, but probably hadn’t heard about Jesus. Paul spoke to her and she and her household were compelled to be baptized. We need to remember that the prerequisites to baptism are repentance and belief in Jesus. When it says that her whole household was baptized, this would exclude anyone who couldn’t repent and believe, like babies and small children. Later on, Paul and Silas were put in prison.

Acts 16:23-34 (KJV)

23 And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: 24 Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks. 25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. 26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed. 27 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. 28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here. 29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, 30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. 32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. 33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. 34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.

Even though Paul and Silas were in prison, they prayed and sang to YHWH. YHWH responded by setting them free from their cells and shackles. The jailor was about to commit suicide when Paul interrupted him. The jailor wanted to know what he must do in order to be saved. He was told just to believe and he did. Then they went to his family and they were saved too. His whole household was baptized, but again, only those who were able to repent and believe in Jesus Christ were saved and baptized.

Acts 18:7-8 (KJV)

And he departed thence, and entered into a certain man’s house, named Justus, one that worshipped God, whose house joined hard to the synagogue. And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized.

Paul later is compelled to preach to the Gentiles. He stayed at a man’s house that lived next to the local synagogue. The chief ruler of the synagogue, his household, and many other Corinthians believed Paul’s message of repentance and were baptized.

Acts 19:1-7 (KJV)

1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. And all the men were about twelve.

Paul comes to Ephesus and finds 12 disciples of John the Baptist. He asked them if they had received the Holy Spirit to which they told him that they had not. Paul explained that when John was preaching and baptizing, that he spoke of Jesus Christ who would come after him and that they should follow Him. They understood and agreed, were baptized, received the Holy Spirit, and spoke in other languages while prophesying.

So to recap, there are several baptisms mentioned in the book of Acts. The people who are ready to be baptized must first repent and then believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. There are times when people received the Holy Spirit before, during, and after baptism. Sometimes people even began speaking in other languages. What needs to be noted here is that there were no babies or small children baptized, there were no instances of baptism by pouring or sprinkling, and there were no baptisms by any other means but by water. This is why Paul says in Ephesians 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism.” The reason that the writer of Hebrews 6:2 can say that there is a doctrine of baptisms is because of what happens physically and what happens spiritually. Let’s now transition into Paul’s teachings on baptism.

Romans 6:1-7 (KJV)

1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Paul takes the physical form of baptism and explains it in a spiritual sense. He says that when we were baptized into Jesus Christ, that we were actually baptized into his death. This makes sense because when we are fully immersed under water, we have to hold our breath. Also, it seems as if we are ‘buried’ under the water which is similar to being buried in a grave. Then when we rise up again, it seems like a resurrection has occurred and we can breathe again. This outward expression is a kind of evidence that there has been an inward change. It means that we used to be sinners and are now set free from the hold sin has on us. The curse has been broken and like Paul says, ‘henceforth we should not serve sin.’ If a person is sprinkled or poured upon, how can this analogy make sense?

Colossians 2:10-13 (KJV)

10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: 11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: 12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

Again, Paul likens baptism to the death and resurrection of Christ. When we become fully immersed in the water, we too die to ourselves and rise up with newness of life in service to Him.

So there you have it. This study on baptisms has been insightful and amazing. Depending on your background, you may have had a different view on baptism than what was presented in these two blogs. That’s okay though. This is why we as astute Bereans must look at Sola Scriptura in order to come to our doctrinal conclusions.

Baptism Part 1

In the Old Testament, baptism was used on several occasions. There were also times when people would need to wash their hands, wash their feet, or wash their clothes, but this discussion will focus on baptism of the whole body.

The first reference to baptism is a bit obscure at first, but Paul tells us that it was a symbolic form of baptism.

Exodus 13:21-22 (KJV)

21 And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: 22 He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

Exodus 14:21-22 (KJV)

21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. 22 And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.

1 Corinthians 10:1-2 (KJV)

1Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

This was basically the first time that we see baptism used. Notice that it happened after the salvation from Egypt which is the land of bondage. Paul is telling us that the children of Israel that YHWH saved were all baptized. The next baptism occurs when the children of Israel make a covenant with YHWH.

Exodus 19:1-11 (KJV)

1 In the third month, when the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai. For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount. And Moses went up unto God, and the Lord called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel; Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself. Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel. And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the Lord commanded him. And all the people answered together, and said, All that the Lord hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the Lord. And the Lord said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the Lord. 10 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes, 11 And be ready against the third day: for the third day the Lord will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai.

14 And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes.

Moses sanctified the people and had their clothes washed in response to the covenant that they made with YHWH. This marked a transition period after their salvation from Egypt.

After this event, there were several times throughout the year when a person would be ceremonially baptized. This type of baptism was used to show that a person was transferring from being unclean to clean. Each of the following baptisms took place when a person was fully immersed under water.

In Leviticus 14, we learn about the laws concerning leprosy. When a leper is declared clean, he must follow several instructions, some of which is to wash his clothes, shave his hair, and wash himself with water.

In Leviticus 15 we learn about the laws concerning a running issue or bodily discharges. A man is declared unclean if he has a running issue and everything he touches is unclean. If you were to touch something that he touched, or even touch him, you were to wash your clothes and wash yourself. This would allow you to be clean that night. If at any time there is an emission of semen, the man is to wash his clothes and himself. If a woman comes in contact with the semen, she will do the same. If a woman is on her monthly period, then she is declared unclean for seven days. If you touch her or the things she sits on, you have to wash your clothes and wash yourself.

In Leviticus 16, we read about the instructions concerning the Day of Atonement. On this day, Aaron will wash his body before putting on his priestly clothes. Then when he is finished performing his duties, he will take off his garments and leave them in the tabernacle of the congregation, and then wash himself and put his clothes back on.

In Leviticus 17, there are instructions concerning the sanctity of blood. If a person eats an animal that dies naturally or is torn by beasts, he is to wash his clothes and himself with water.

In Leviticus 22, God says that if anyone becomes unclean, he is to wash himself with water and will be unclean until the evening. Only then could he eat of the holy offerings.

In Numbers 19, God gives the laws concerning the red heifer of purification. After the priest has performed the instructions, he is to wash his clothes and himself and will be unclean until the evening. If a man becomes unclean because he touched the dead body of a person, he is to wash his clothes and wash himself.

In Deuteronomy 23, if an army goes to war and a man becomes unclean, he will wash himself with water.

So each of these laws concern baptisms after coming into covenant with YHWH. When a person needed to go through a baptism, they entered a mikvah. There are two direct references to a mikvah in the Bible.

Leviticus 11:36 (KJV)

36 Nevertheless a fountain or pit, wherein there is plenty of water, shall be clean: but that which toucheth their carcase shall be unclean.

The word plenty is translated from the word mikvah. The second is

Jeremiah 17:13 (KJV)

13 O Lord, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the Lord, the fountain of living waters.

The word translated hope is mikvah which gives us the understanding that Messiah is the cleansing mikvah, or hope, of Israel. This gives Christ a direct correlation with the baptisms of the Old Testament.

YHWH talks about a spiritual washing through the prophets. In Isaiah 1, God talks about how sinful the people were. He tells them

Isaiah 1:16-20 (KJV)

16 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; 17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. 18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. 19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: 20 But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

It’s clear that the baptisms of the Old Testament were not meant to physically cleanse someone, but to rather take them from an unclean state to a clean state. The spiritual washing that YHWH speaks of here takes us from a spiritual state of uncleanness to a spiritual state of cleanness. This is what He wants anyways. If you’re dipping into a mikvah just to fulfill the law, you’ve missed the point.

So now let’s fast-forward to the New Testament with John’s Baptism. Let’s look at it through a chronological way using all four gospel accounts.

Luke 3:1-21 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
Mark 1:11 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;
Matthew 3:11 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, Mark 1:4John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. Luke 3:3And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;
Matthew 3:2And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
John 1:19-2219 And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? 20 And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. 21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. 22 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. Matthew 3:4And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. Mark 1:6And John was clothed with camel’s hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;
Matthew 3:5-6Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. Matthew 3:8-9Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages. 15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;
John 1:24-2524 And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. 25 And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?
Matthew 3:11 11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Mark 1:7-8And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. Matthew 3:1212 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. Matthew 3:1313 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. Mark 1:9And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.
John 1:29-3129 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. 30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. 31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
Matthew 3:14-1514 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
Matthew 3:16-1716 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Mark 1:10-1110 And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: 11 And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Luke 3:21-2221 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, 22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
John 1:32-3432 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. 33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. 34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.
Luke 3:2323 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age…

I’d like for you to notice a few things about this passage.

  • John is preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
  • He does this in the same way the baptisms in the Torah are performed, by immersion in water.
  • When the priests and Levites came to John, they didn’t accuse him of doing something that was against the Torah, but asked him if he was the Christ who would baptize.
  • John claims to baptize with water but says that Jesus will baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
  • When Jesus came, John asked to be baptized by Him. But Jesus said that He must be baptized with water in order to fulfill all righteousness. Why? Hebrews 2:17 (KJV) 17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

Jesus was baptized by immersion not for remission of sins, but in order to be like us. Also, we visually see what happens spiritually with us when we are baptized. The Father is pleased and the Holy Spirit descends. Another reason Jesus was baptized was to show His transition from a private life to a public work of ministry. This happened when He was 30 years old which is the time when a man could become a priest according to Numbers 4.

After this experience, Jesus had his disciples start baptizing people for repentance.

John 3:22-26 (KJV)

22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized. 23 And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized. 24 For John was not yet cast into prison. 25 Then there arose a question between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about purifying. 26 And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.

John 4:1-3 (KJV)

1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,) He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.

Of course, John knew that he was not the Christ but was the one who prepared the way for Christ. So it didn’t bother him that Jesus’ disciples were baptizing more people. In fact, this is what he wants. In John 4, it tells us clearly that Jesus Himself never baptized anyone, but allowed His disciples to. Ephesians 4:1-3 Paul now gives advice on how we should walk. God has called each one of us to a specific job and we should walk worthily of that vocation with all humility, meekness, patience, bearing one another, and endeavoring to keep unity.

Ephesians 4:4-6 The motivation we have to walk worthily is due to the fact that we have one body of Christ, one Holy Spirit, one hope of our calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God. These 7 points should allow us to remain unified in our efforts because God is above us, works through us, and is inside of us. Ephesians 4:7-11 Verse 8 is a direct quote from Psalm 68:18 which I believe is a reference to Mt. Sinai at the giving of the commandments and the establishment of the Levitical priesthood. God gave gifts to the children of Israel in the form of vocations. Now that Christ has ascended to heaven and the Levitical priesthood is no longer intact, He gave new gifts to His church in the form of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. Ephesians 4:12-16 The reason Christ gives these five vocations is because He wants them to perfect the saints so that they too can work the ministry and edify the church body of Christ. They will keep performing this work until the whole church is in unity with the faith, knows that Jesus is the Son of God, becomes perfect, and till we can measure ourselves with Christ. When this happens, we’ll no longer be children who believe any doctrine that we hear. In fact, we will speak the truth in love which helps us to grow in Christ and promote unity. Christ is the head of the church body which must work together, edifying itself, so that it functions properly.

Ephesians 4:17-19 When we receive these gifts from God, we should not continue to walk like we used to walk, nor as the Gentiles walk. They walk in the vanity of their mind, having their understanding darkened, being alienated from God because of the blindness of their heart. They have no compassion because they have given themselves over to unrestrained lusts who work in uncleanness because they are greedy. This is a call to have a complete lifestyle change.

Ephesians 4:20-24 If you are now in Christ, then you have heard Him and been taught by Him. Therefore we are not to conduct ourselves according to our old lifestyle which is corrupt, but rather, renew the spirit of our mind by putting on the new man which is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Ephesians 4:25-32 How should we practically walk out our faith in righteousness and true holiness? We stop lying, speak the truth, be angry without sinning, delay wrath, don’t give the devil a place, stop stealing, work honesty so that we can give to the needy, stop cussing or using filthy language, speak with edification, don’t grieve the Holy Spirit, stop being bitter, stop being full of wrath, stop being full of anger, stop crying out, stop wanting to do evil to others, be kind to others, be tenderhearted, and forgive each other. Is that so hard to ask! 🙂 Paul quotes many of the commandments concerning our relationship with mankind found in the Old Testament. If we are the saints of God, we should be doing the things that Paul tells us to do at the end of this chapter.

Ephesians 3:1-12 The dispensation of the grace of God was given to Paul to minister to us. It was through revelation that He understood the mystery of God. He wrote to the Ephesians in another letter about this mystery. The mystery is this: that Gentiles should be fellow heirs, of the same body, and partakers of God’s promise in Christ by the gospel. Paul considers himself a prisoner of Christ and less than the least of all the saints. Who is he to preach the gospel to the Gentiles and to reveal this mystery to all men? This new truth was purposed long ago and now we have the boldness and access to reveal it the church.

Ephesians 3:13-16 Paul bows his knees to God because he has gone through tribulations for the Ephesians, but his desire is that they not worry about that. He considers it his honor. Therefore he prays that they become strengthened in their soul by the Holy Spirit. All saints have been named after Christ.

Ephesians 3:17-19 When we become rooted and grounded in the love of Christ by Him dwelling by faith in our hearts, Paul prays that we should somehow try to comprehend the love of Christ and be filled with the fullness of God.

Ephesians 2:1-5 Paul reminds us of what it was like before Christ. We were dead in trespasses and sins, walking after the prince of the power of the air according to the course of this world, and our conduct was after the lusts of our flesh and mind. We were children of disobedience and children of wrath like everyone else. But Christ, by the mercy and love of God, has taken us from our dead state and made us alive in Him by His grace.

Ephesians 2:13-16 When we were in our sinful state, we were far from God. Christ, who is our peace, makes peace by bringing us near to God by His blood on the cross making us one instead of two. A similar thing happens in marriage. Christ has broken down the separation, or enmity, which is the law of commandments contained in ordinances. What are these laws of commandments contained in ordinances?

Ephesians 2:17-19 Christ came and preached peace to the Jews and to the Gentiles. It’s because of Christ that we have access to God the Father through the Holy Spirit. God now declares that we are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with all those who are called saints in the household of God.

Ephesians 2:20-22 Jesus Christ is our chief cornerstone, the apostles and prophets are the foundation, and the building is the saints which form a holy temple which becomes the habitation of God through the Holy Spirit. This is a great comparison to the city of God that we read in Revelation 21.

Ephesians 1:1-2 These two verses are the introduction to the letter. Paul is the author and the audience is the saints at Ephesus and anyone who is faithful in Christ Jesus. The word grace here does not necessarily mean ‘unmerited favor,’ but rather, good will, loving-kindness, favor, or thanks. Paul is acting as somewhat a mediator to these people by saying that grace and peace should be to them from God the Father and Jesus Christ. This church has an angel over it as referenced in Revelation 2:1-7.

Ephesians 1:3-6 Paul wants to bless God because He has blessed us with spiritual blessings in heavenly places. Paul mentions that God chose, or predestined, us before the foundation of the world. This speaks of His all-knowing power that’s practically incomprehensible to us. Before God created the world, He wanted us to be holy, without blame in love, adopted as children to Himself, and to praise Him. To be without blame means to be morally right and without fault.

Ephesians 1:7-8 Christ has redeemed us through His sacrifice on the cross. When this occurred and then later resurrected, He took His blood into the sanctuary in Heaven and offered the final sacrifice for our sins so that we can truly have forgiveness. See Hebrews 9:11-28. This is only due to the riches of His grace. God has abounded this grace towards us in all wisdom and understaning.

Ephesians 1:9-12 What is the mystery of God’s will? That He will gather together all things that are in Christ so that we can praise Him. This of course was predestined before the foundation of the world.

Ephesians 1:13-14 Here Paul talks about the gospel of our salvation in how we put our trust in Christ and were sealed with the Holy Spirit that was promised to us. The word earnest here does not mean ‘intense conviction,’ but rather, money which is given as a down payment that the full amount will later be paid. The Holy Spirit inside of us is our down payment that leads up to the full purchase.

Ephesians 1:15-19 Paul received news on the faith that the saints in Ephesus had towards Jesus Christ. This led him to pray even more for them. His prayer included that God give them wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of God, that the eyes of their understanding would be enlightened, that they may know the hope of His calling, to know what the riches of God’s inheritance is, and to know the exceeding greatness of His power toward us is.

Ephesians 1:20-23 Paul says that the mighty power of God is what resurrected Christ from the dead and that same power set Him at the right hand of God in heaven. This position that was given to Christ far exceeds any human authoritative position of power. Christ also received all of creation as His dominion and is now at the head of the church. The church being the ‘body of Christ’ which is His fullness.

It’s important that we stick to exactly what the Scriptures tell us about this position so that everything within the church will run smoothly. If you are called to be a Bishop, then I hope this study is a great resource for you! Let’s start with a couple of definitions:

Strong’s G1984 – episkopē  ἐπισκοπή

1)investigation, inspection, visitation

a)that act by which God looks into and searches out the ways, deeds character, of men, in order to adjudge them their lot accordingly, whether joyous or sad

So by these definitions alone, it would seem that a Bishop is an elder in the church who oversees the church affairs by making sure things are done rightly and that all investigations are performed appropriately. The Bishop is in charge of the other elders and officers that are appointed within the church. The following chart will help you to understand this concept. We see that the Bishop is at the top of the hierarchy. Positions not included in this chart would be treasurers, custodians, and other church members but these are the ones we’ll focus on. Also, we understand that God is the head of the church and not mankind.

Now let’s get into the scripture references for Bishops. The first is in Acts.

Acts 20:28 (KJV)

28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

Paul is addressing the elders of the church at Ephesus. It’s unclear whether he is conversing with the bishops only or all the elders. Either way, Paul makes it clear that the Holy Spirit is the one who has appointed them to their positions and it is their responsibility to take care of the church of God. By the way, if Paul is talking with all the elders in the church and not solely the bishops, then what he says is true seeing that each position has it’s own activities to oversee.

2 Timothy 4:22 (GNV)

22 The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy Spirit. Grace be with you, Amen. ¶ The second Epistle written from Rome unto Timothy, the first Bishop elected of the Church of Ephesus, when Paul was presented the second time before the Emperor Nero.

In the 1599 Geneva Bible Version of 2 Timothy 4:22, the added footnote says that the first bishop elected at the church in Ephesus was Timothy.

Philippians 1:1 (KJV)

1 Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

Paul address his Philippian letter to all the saints at Philippi including the staff which includes bishops and deacons. This word bishop can also be translated as overseer to include all the elders in the church, not just the Bishops. This would mean that everyone would be included in this letter and not a select few.

1 Peter 2:25 (KJV)

25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

Here Peter references Jesus as the Bishop of our souls. Jesus is the one overseer who is in charge of the church as a whole. A Bishop is an overseer over a local congregation.

Now we will get into the details of what Paul outlines as the duties of a Bishop. Both Timothy and Titus were Bishops. Paul writes both of them letters outlining what a Bishop is. For Timothy, he writes about 7 verses. For Titus, he writes about 38 verses.

1 Timothy 3:1-7 (KJV)

1This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.  A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;  Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;  One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;  (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)  Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.  Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

Titus 1:5-3:11 (KJV)

5 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: 6 If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly. 7 For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; 8 But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; 9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. 10 For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: 11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake. 12 One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, the Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. 13 This witness is true. So as you can see, there are some similarities and there are differences. Combined though, Paul gives all the prerequisites to becoming a Bishop over a local congregation. Since a Bishop is in charge of such a large group of people, much prayer, research, and consideration must be involved when making an important decision like this one. A person who feels led to become a Bishop must posses certain spiritual gifts. This graphic shows the minimum requirements. A Bishop could have more than the ones listed here though.

Bishop Gifts

When a person desires the position of being a Bishop, they should be focused on administering, guiding, and overseeing. They are a person who is a leader, who sees the whole picture, is able to delegate, and understands each of the roles of the administration gifts, each of the functions of the operations gifts, and each of the uses of the manifestations gifts. A good example of a Bishop besides Timothy and Titus would be to study Nehemiah. He displayed extraordinary leadership skills despite the atmosphere of the people.

Obtaining the office of a Bishop does come with some disadvantages. That much power and authority can be used in a negative way if the person is not careful. If you are seeking this office, follow these suggestions:

  • Don’t become lazy by telling other people what to do and never doing anything yourself.
  • Be sensitive to the needs and situations of others when dictating demands.
  • Don’t use people for your own selfish desires.
  • Don’t overlook character flaws in people who shouldn’t hold certain positions or responsibilities.
  • Don’t overload people with tasks.
  • Don’t overstep your authority.
  • Be open to listening to other people’s ideas.
  • Don’t neglect praying.
  • Don’t take foolish pride in your position.

Above all, keep Christ at the head and seek His will for all decision making. Trust that God knows what’s best and lean not on just your own understanding. Remember what Gideon said to the men of Israel:

Judges 8:23 (KJV)

23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the Lord shall rule over you.

Titus 3

Titus 3 (KJV)


3 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, 2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.

Titus 3:1-2 Paul continues his advice to Titus that he needs to tell the bishops to be submissive to the government, to always do the right thing, to speak no evil of anyone, and to be gentle showing meekness. These are servant-leaders who are not supposed to flaunt their position or use their position as a form of power against others.

3 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

Titus 3:3 Paul reminds Titus that every person used to do the things that we preach against. This why we must express gentleness when exhorting others.


4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, 5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Titus 3:4-7 It is not be our righteousness that we are saved, but rather by the kindness, love and mercy of God through the death of Jesus Christ that we can be justified by grace and attain eternal life. Paul lists out three things: mercy, regeneration, and renewal. When we put our faith and trust in Christ after confessing our sins, God grants His mercy on us. When we are baptized by immersion, we are washed by regeneration. When the Holy Spirit enters our life, we are renewed.


8 This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.

Titus 3:8 This truth needs to always be affirmed so that believers will maintain good works. This is what benefits mankind the most.

9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

Titus 3:9 Throughout this process, there may be some distractions. These should be avoided. Paul gives a few examples but with each generation, more items could be added to this list.

10 A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject; 11 Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.

Titus 3:10-11 A heretic is one who follows a false doctrine. If you have admonished this person twice, don’t continue. He is condemning himself. This can be a hard pill to swallow for the Messianic believer who truly has a heart for the lost. But this is the advice Paul gives.


12 When I shall send Artemas unto thee, or Tychicus, be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis: for I have determined there to winter.

Titus 3:12 When Paul sends Artemas or Tychicus to Titus, Titus is to meet Paul in Nicopolis, Greece since he’ll be there all winter.


13 Bring Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently, that nothing be wanting unto them.

Titus 3:13 When Titus leaves Crete, he is also to bring with him Zenas and Apollos so that they are not without anything.

14 And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.

Titus 3:14 Paul wants these men to also maintain good works and produce good fruit. Performing good works by obeying sound doctrine is a main theme of this letter.


15 All that are with me salute thee. Greet them that love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen.

Titus 3:15 Paul ends his letter by saying there are several people with him and all of them salute Titus. He encourages Titus to greet all fellow-believers and wishes grace to be with Titus and those in his company.
